There is plenty of low-value forest and fallow farmland that can be used for the small amount of wind and solar generation proposed so far. But much more land will be needed if the state is serious about achieving the Whitmer administration's goal of carbon-neutral power generation by 2040. The Public Service Commission estimates that it will require 326 square miles of windmills and solar panels, plus enormous battery warehouses and nuclear power plants. I don't know what mix of wind and solar is implied by this estimate, but to help you visualize it, 326 square miles equals a swath a mile wide between Ohio and the Straits, or 9 whole townships. Much of Michigan will be in the viewshed of these plants, which is why the Governor and the wind- and solar-power vendors were so desperate to pass the "windmill cramdown" act in the last legislature, over the objection of local governments. See Public Acts 233 and 234 of 2023. Cities, townships, and counties no longer have the ability to block energy leases through zoning and approvals. The law does not include nuclear power plants.

Liberals lose sight of the big picture when they're trying to ram-thru some woke policies. Just look at whats happening in California with the lack of water to fight the fire because of the Delta smelt.

^Yep. Again disordered priorities and policies that check boxes.

LA is sadly experiencing the outcomes [the rich and poor, the right, left and center] of extreme woke/ left agendas in place when an emergency occurs!

The risk was extant and known [per history of the region].

Couple that with climate changes and fire-service cut-backs and ideologies of the gov, mayoral and lead fire department admins.

Imagine the red-tape mess residents will now also face! Maybe Newsome will push to clear-cut [well finally] for low-income housing. Indeed walkable.

The insurance companies seemed to have had the heads-up!

Yes, they've been watching climate change for over 10 years and slowly withdrawing insurance coverage AND raising prices on what they've kept. They don't have their heads up their collective asses insisting that there is no change happening, like some government officials. Not just in the US either; Lloyd's of London has been a leader in this. And those nasty WOKE Santa Ana winds just keep getting stronger. I just wish the mayor of LA would tell them to stop

Yep. Agreed. California officials and politicians/ policies included.

Re. mayor Bass, I think she's gonna have a lot of work to keep her job.

AND sponsoring catastrophe bonds, shifting risk to investors. That fixes their problem but not the problem.

I know that, but at least they know there IS a problem; they're not trying to deny that it exists.

Yes, there have been some issues that need to be addressed by the politicians out there, but the don't involve acts of God, such as incredible winds, drought, forests which naturally have undergrowth [[contrary to at least a couple people's ideas, vacuuming and raking don't work)

When you look at the 10 worst fires in California,6 were the result of shorting power lines, the power company reports it can take up to 1 year to get permits in order to trim trees from the power lines.

Interviews with original Indians in California have them saying even before the first settlers came they used to burn the forests so they could rejuvenate.

Remember Smokey The Bear ,Only you can prevent forest fires.

Remember paper bags at the supermarket that were 100% recycled verses plastic which is not,so we could save the trees.

    How are those trees now?

Insurance companies base on risk assessment,it has nothing to do with climate change and they do what they have always done, look for ways to collect money without having to pay out .

The states and public has a responsibility to mitigate losses but using preventive measures.

We see it in Florida when hurricanes come through, northern boat owners who have boats in slips here do not take measures to secure the boats based on they have insurance to cover damages,so the insurance does and just jacks up the rates for everybody else to compensate for their loss.

So in cases like California if the fires are being started because the state does not want to be proactive and trim the trees in order to reduce losses, how can one really expect the insurance company to?

No different then in Detroit,if ice storms constantly knock out power because of derelict power infrastructure, the power company is going to increase rates in order to fix it.

Cannot say CC is causing ice storms that are taking out power lines because snow and ice was there long before people were.

The first climate related disaster that we know of anyways or gets the most attention, was the ice age .
