Default Detroit's pizza industry and its global role

Detroit has long been a synonym for the American auto industry, but it could also be for the pizza industry. So here's a shout out to them and what they add to our economy.

Domino's Pizza [No. 1 in US and World] east of Ann Arbor
Little Caesars Pizza [No. 3] in Downtown Detroit
Hungry Howie's Pizza [No. 8] in Madison Heights
Jet's Pizza [No. 9] in Sterling Heights

Together they accounted for 30.5% of the U.S. pizza sales in 2023 with a combined $14.36 billion of the $46.98 billion industry total.

The four pizza companies recorded nearly 15% of global pizza sales with $23.6 billion of the $159 billion total.

I still like Buddy's pizza from the original Buddy's the best.

    Some fun facts:

    ● On any given day, an estimated 13% of the U.S. population eats pizza and nearly half of Americans eat pizza at least once per week.
    ● The average American consumes about 46 slices of pizza each year, which, the study says, is about 3 billion pizzas consumed annually in the U.S.
    ● Super Bowl Sunday, New Year's Eve, Halloween, Thanksgiving Eve and New Year's Day are the busiest days for pizza sales in the U.S.

Not to be a downer, but pizza has to be in the top 5 of worst foods for nutrition. Sure, eat a couple of pieces once in a while but those numbers are ridiculous.

We owe it all to Buddy's Pizza. Thank you, Buddy's Pizza.

IMO, out of those 4, the only good one is Jets. We eat quite a bit of Pizza Pizza as our kids are young and quality is not their highest concern, but it is generally trash. If the wife and I want actual good pizza, it is going to be:

    Green Lantern
    Loui's pizza
    Buddy's
Cloverleaf [[though the last couple times have not been great)

There are a ton of mom & pop joints serving up good slices as well.

It is interesting how so many pizza companies are headquartered here. I guess I'm partly guilty. I've loved pizza from way back. I remember fondly my fifth birthday party with homemade pizza.

My go to list includes Holiday Pizza at 19 and Van Dyke, Jets of course, Buddy's, Loui's, Green Lantern, and Gathering Place at 17 $ John R., and Crispelli's

Costco and other stores carry Motor City Pizza, and it looks like a good seller. It's actually made in New Boston.

When we lived in Novi, we got our pizza from Primo's Pizza. It's still at 10 Mile and Meadowbrook.

Crazy to think about the expenditure for restaurant pizza in the US equals the GDP of a country like Tunisia. Yikes à la power of ten.

Hah! I don't eat pizza often but it must be great for me to down all those carbs!

I still like Niki's Greektown/ downtown - but that's been some years now.

Perhaps not any good now. Anyone been to Niki's lately?

We buy those when we go up north and they are pretty good for a frozen pizza.

Pizza House in A2 has Chicago style deep dish, better than in Chicago.
    Cottage Inn good as well.
Detroit style never did much for me, prefer a softer crust.

I lived in the 6 Mile Rd. and Davison intersection area. During the 1960s there was a pizzeria called Home of the Pizza right on the corner of Moenart and 6 Mile and I was the delivery boy around 1965-66. It was just a half mile from Buddys and Shields Bar, the ground-zero of the pizza industry.

You must not realize that pizza is served to school kids not just because they'll eat it but it meets the requirements of FOUR food groups! Wheat, dairy, vegetables, fruit [[yes a tomato is a fruit).

I thought the four food groups were fat, sugar, salt, and starch--the basis of all fast food meals.

I recall someone claiming that pizza would count as health food if not for the fat/grease/oil. I have no idea whether that's true. It probably comes down to the semantics.

Others talk about healthy hair. Hair can't be healthy. It's dead.

It's often the healthiest part of pizza, except when kitchen staff are required to wear hairnets.

Add to that preservatives deluxe. Recall those fast-food salads so nice crisp and 'green'!

Pretty much the same big for as you, but Loui's is first, then Green Lantern, Cloverleaf and the Buddy's on Conant. Last local Buddy's we had [[Woodward) was awful. The sauce was sour.

Corporate pizza is a scourge on civilization. Buddy's outlets are atrocious and expensive.
