    Default The Inner Ring Game--The Twenty Cities with land borders with the City of Detroit

    Can you name them? Can you place them?

    I found this little click and drag online puzzle that will let you place them where they border Detroit. I'm sure it will take you all only a few minutes, as it did me, to place them. So have at it.

    I didn't get my score at the end because it would not accept my answer of "none of them" to their question of which Metro-Detroit city I would avoid visiting.

    My one small enlightenment? I didn't realize that all the Grosse Pointes touched Detroit.

    That was fun. I was surprised to get 100% but it took me 16 minutes, partly from learning the controls.

    I tried to "avoid visiting" Phoenix but it wouldn't accept that so I used Windsor instead. Nothing against Windsor but the excessive security to get there and back is nauseating.

    I used Oak Park as a workplace although I haven't worked there in 45 years!

    Grosse Pointe Shores?
    Yes or No?

    Shores - No. It only goes a block or two from the lake

    Won't let me play; just asks me the questions and then tells me I got 0% correct. Can't move the pieces

    Neither could I until I tried clicking then releasing to select the piece, then I could click & drag it. {I don't recall ever seeing mouse management handled like that.}

    Does that help?

    Fun, but a little glitchy with the mouse. GP Shores does not touch Detroit, but it also is in two counties: Wayne and Macomb.

    St. Clair Shores also doesn't touch Detroit, but it gets just a few blocks from touching Detroit.

    The SE most point in SCS is 8 Mile Rd. & Beaconsfield.

    The NE most point in Detroit is 8 Mile Rd. & Kelly.

    The two are about 3, maybe 4 blocks apart.

    Yes, it helped me move them and I know that I know all of them but it keeps telling me I got 64% right.

    Finally got it.
    Does that help?

    HA! Which would mean it's granting you credit for 13.44 of the 21 pieces. {I assume there's some rounding involved somewhere.}

    Now I'm wondering how meticulous a player has to be when positioning the pieces. A good design would snap them into place when you're anywhere near close. Hmmm.

    It's a puzzle within a puzzle.

    Okay, I just now tried it again. Some of the pieces did visually snap into place but others didn't. It's inconsistent. Oh well.

    Yes, it seems to be the upper tier that was giving me grief; if you don't get Eastpointe just right, the others don't follow

    Exactly. The upper tier shares a straight line boundary with Detroit so that much was easy. What's more difficult is exactly how far east or west that whole tier should be shifted.

    I {almost subconsciously} aligned Center Line with the faint Van Dyke and that forced the rest of that upper tier into place. Another clue was Ferndale straddling Woodward.

    Now I'm wondering why they didn't make Windsor a moveable piece. It borders Detroit and would emphasize the unique relationship between the two.

    Naw, not enlightened.

    I used the Woodward/Ferndale trick to finally align them too.

    What's the story behind that conspicuously thin sliver of Grosse Pointe Woods that protrudes into Harper Woods? It's only two streets wide, mostly residential. {Allard Ave. and Stanhope St.}

    Google found only this:
    "The Village of Lochmoor, forerunner of Grosse Pointe Woods, incorporated in 1927, and annexed the Stanhope-Allard strip in 1931."

    "The village annexed the Stanhope-Allard strip of land from what was then Gratiot Township in 1931. The village changed its name from Lochmoor to Grosse Pointe Woods in 1939, but didn't incorporate as a city until 1950."

    It's likely an artifact of ribbon farms, but why there and nowhere else?

    I lived on that side of town for years and never realized this was a thing. I only wondered why Allard had its own exit off of I94

    Country Club Woods was one of several parcels of land sold off from the west side of the present Country Club of Detroit to pay taxes.
