I still don't understand after almost 30 years of the Woodward Dream Cruise why Detroit hadn't participated in it.

Most cruisers were scared to drive into Detroit. Were worried about crime or getting car-jacked. That's why they stopped at 8 Mile.
^ I'd say they'd have more to fear in some areas of Chicago
And some parts of California they've 'thrown' up their hands to crime. You just leave all windows down/ doors open!

I always thought that this was a nice try when it had started in 2014 but why didn't the event included being in the parking lot of the strip mall where Meijer is. It would had better blended with the Dream Cruise there
One year during the Dream Cruise there were cars parked at the State Fair Grounds.
In 2021, there was a Motor City Car Crawl event in downtown Detroit for four days in early August. Looks like One and Done!
Before that in 2007 or so, there was the Detroit Festival of Speed and Style, a 3-day car event in Campus Martius and along E Jefferson. Ran a couple years.
So it appears that there have been several attempts to get cruising activities going in Detroit that haven't worked out.
Up north on Woodward, the car companies and auto-related suppliers and other companies rent out large areas to display their cars and equipment. And those locations are mostly 8 Mile to Birmingham. Along the Cruise route, different cities sponsor different events. That helps to draw people to a particular area.
At this point, the Woodward Dream Cruise as we know it today is just going to keep on keeping on for as long as it makes sense. Miles of space for cars and people to park along the route. Free. The special displays don't hurt, nor the vendors who set up their wares.
Love the 104.3 radio backdrop to the cruise too!!
The Motor City Crawl was a response to Detroit not having an Auto Show for the second year in a row due to Covid. I thought that it was a slap in the faces of local Auto enthusiasts whom live in Detroit when the Dream Cruise had extended northward to Pontiac some 15 miles away but couldn't extend southward 2 miles into Detroit. I thought and still think that it's a power tug of war between Dream Cruise organizers and leaders of Detroit. GM could had easily sponsored the Cruise coming as south as the Model T Plaza in Highland Park but with the exception of having a few classic car drive northbound on Woodward to integrate into the cause GM didn't care to be involve. One year during the Dream Cruise there were cars parked at the State Fair Grounds.

Because nobody “cruised” down there. End of story.
I always thought that an ideal southern end spot would be the large parking lots of the shopping center in Highland Park that straddles Woodward in front of the Model T plant.
What better backdrop than the factory that changed the world, where the moving assembly line was perfected, revolutionized transportation and made the automobile affordable to the masses that now parade in the Dream Cruise.
Maybe Ford will get into it next year by having classic Ford's sitting outside of the closed okant in Highland Park.I always thought that an ideal southern end spot would be the large parking lots of the shopping center in Highland Park that straddles Woodward in front of the Model T plant.

Jay Leno Arrives To The 2024 Woodward Dream Cruise In His Chrysler Turbine Car

Jay Leno visits Woodward Dream Cruise
Dreams really do come true during the Woodward Dream Cruise as a long-forgotten car revs up back to life.
I was out and about on Woodward far southeast of 8 Mile Saturday and there was many more cruisers venturing into the city than there were during the Dream years ago. Also several of Detroits Finest were out there with a few pulled over enforcing limits I assume. A testament to the city improving or just a well needed opportunity to get air pushed through radiators and actually move for a while is anybody’s guess.

Dream Cruise this year was still very well attended all week long. Surprisingly, I thought there was LESS police presence then in previous years. I didn't see nearly as many police from other cities this year. The police were pretty much letting stuff go on Wednesday through Friday. I enjoyed it, as I always do, a lot of cool cars out there.
I remember seeing one of the Chrysler Turbine Cars back in the 60's. I lived north of Hamtramck and the car was traveling on 6 Mile Rd near Davison.
All I am saying is thatthe Dream Cruise is the car Mardi Gras of Michigan and the Midwest. Why Detroit didn't capitalized off of the event but decide to have this "Detroit vs Everybody " attitude is beyond me
These backstory details might clear up some confusion about Leno's turbine car at the Dream Cruise.
Jay's Turbine Car Resurrected!
At 23:38 in the Engineering video they say Elwood Engel designed the turbine body after leaving Ford where he designed the T-Bird body. So yes, your eyes are correct. There is a relationship there.
