Default True Gretch - the book

I was surprised to see that yesterday's New York Times
lists Gretchen Whitmer's book as the third best selling
non-fiction book across the nation in the last week.

I read the book. It is excellent and informative. Ms.
Whitmer has a comprehensive understanding of herself.
her abilities, what she can accomplish and her limitation She
She writes extremely clearly and does not take the reader on any dead end side track.

It is an enjoyable and informative book. She may have
her eye on running for a higher office in the future.

She told em now she is not interested in running for VP or president unless she figures now is not the climate but it would have gotten her feet wet if she did have higher aspirations.

But many view her as more progressive when people are looking for more conservative Dems.

As loud as those in that position are and as much as they yell they are looking out for their constituents, you notice they get muffled pretty quick once they reach the hill. As a majority people are not comfortable going to far out one way or another.

I kinda think she hurt herself when she attached herself to the “squad” to get that support and the stigma that followed,if she had just stuck to mainstream conservative dem she probably would not be that bad.

These are just the faces we see,the real battles are being fought behind the scenes with the king makers or queen makers.

HC was about as a powerful and ingrained force in politics as a woman can be,she could not pull it off.

States flip red and blue all the time,it’s needed to keep the system in check, long term it’s not really considered an amazing accomplishment like it is in that moment in time.

But this is how politicians become millionaires, book deals, paid speeches and notoriety profiting.

She has said countless times that she will not run for national office until she is done in Michigan which will be in 2 yrs. Having said that, she did indicate if Joe had actually offered her VP in 2020 she may have taken it.

Probably because JB is more conservative mainstream, which says she would drop Michigan in a heartbeat if the right opportunity presented itself, understandably so.

JB May have his issues but under KH it would probably be risky and a career killer, but she is young enough to bide her time and wait for the right circumstances,if you think about it once you reach VP the only other goal is president,if not most political careers are over with nobody really remembers VPs 10 years later.

As far as women go her and Tulsi at this point in time are really the only subjective ones.

Yea it’s like that everywhere, from good old boy run cities to state wide political machines that are really running things from behind the curtain,to them it’s not about red or blue ,it’s power and money.

Its amazing where you can take a major metropolitan area and you think it’s run by a mayor and city council but at the end of the day, they always still answer to a small group, and it’s usually not the ones they claim to represent.

Love it, Zacha. Bond is where I got my handle! Stromberg comes from a Bond villain called Carl Stromberg.

^ Yes! Hola Stromberg! Lots of great one-liners and names from the Bond flicks. One of my favorite coming out of that movie referenced above is how the west is both 'decadent and divided...' HAH!

Whitmer stands on the threshold of being a transformational governor if she keeps her campaign promises. Key among them is the creation of a cabinet-level position to deal with the issue of poverty, which is prevalent in both rural and urban Michigan. It is a promise she first made at a gubernatorial town hall on poverty, which I moderated during the heated primary. She later repeated that promise several times on the campaign trail.

    6 years later

Many Michigan residents — including families with children — continue to grapple with poverty, with rates rising in over half of the state’s counties, according to census figures released last week.
From rural Michigan to the state’s most populous county, Wayne, poverty rates inched up in 2022: to 13.3 percent, from 13 percent inx 2021 and 12.6 percent in 2020, when the rate fell as pandemic aid poured into families’ bank accounts.
The rate increased in 49 of 83 counties, and Michigan is among 16 states that experienced two years of increases.

That puts Michigan in 13th in the country

Like they say - Results count everything else is BS.

Even more disturbing- Child poverty rate in Detroit = 43% when the national average was 12.4% in 2023.

Even more strange was the child poverty rates actually increased with the influx of billions in programs implemented during COVID - so at a time when there was more of a cash infusion directly into the economy, the poverty rate was steadily increasing when it should have been decreasing.

Richard... what year did the democrats get the state house/senate back from the republicans after 42 years? Whitmer isn't able to do anything without the legislatures approval.

She made the promises not me .

She even created a cabinet, which is another taxpayer paid position so why would she do that if she knew she was not going to be able to keep her promises ?

Governor Whitmer’s Michigan COVID Recovery Plan will provide more support for families through food assistance so more Michiganders can afford to put food on the table for themselves and their families.

    https://www.michigan.gov/coronavirus...conomy-and-end

It did not say MAY it said WILL but yet in the same period, the level of poverty increased and not decreased.

    Why ?

Because it was the legislative committee?

The same time the governor controlled the legislature house and senate,so are you saying the governors own party was the basis of the poverty increase?

^ You're smart enough never to believe any politician 100% of the time, right?

If not, there's that border thingy that we can get the Mexicans to pay for!

I have always said,it does not matter who wears the suit it’s the policies that matter.

But there is a big difference between the hill and the states,by design the state level matters more because they are supposed to be the voice of the people and where the people are tasked with the most control.

The local and state decisions are really what makes the difference weather we eat steak or beans,if people are consistently eating beans,it does not matter who is wearing the suit,it may be time to be rethinking policies and how they effect the ones that matter, the people.

I vaguely remember her doing a whole lot of things without the legislature's approval in 2020...

Different when it comes to emergency orders in a pandemic compared to an actual legislative session...
