Default East Warren bars, lounges, bowling alleys, etc...

Saw this thread today. Its closed so lets re-open it, yes? Here's some info from my side of the fence- Red Carpet- closed now/was some sort of entertainment.development co. Website shows completely rehabbed the place. Looks over the top. The Romantics played their first gig there Feb. 14, 1977 how ironic?! Pets Tavern/Jys.-Pete was my uncle. He built the place and the Pony Keg across the street after the Second World War. Had my first beer[[ahem!!)and 1st legal beer there. You were right- shells were 35c pitchers of Altes $2.50. Hottest chili on the planet- best beef burgers too- made by my Aunt Mary and my mom. She met my dad there. Pete had a hunting lodge near Alpena and used to bring back a deer and make venison stew and hand it out FREE! to the locals- it was a Buffalo neighborhood then, you know. Had two deer heads up on the wall above the jukebox- where are those deer and j box now? if you know, TELL ME! Went inside the place this week and it made me cry! But its still there and NEEDS TO BE SAVED! Send me pics if ya got'em! pool cue place- Carom Club? East Warren Lanes- lanes were all warped in 1984-5. Maple Lanes way better. Allemons Garden Center where Dollar Store is now. Does anybody remember Verdunckts Bakery? How about Football News? In the same building. Get back to me yo.

Earlier and a little further west and then east to Balduck: A&P, Adolph DeLue's and later Jimmy Van Hull's butcher shop, Piggly Wiggly's with its overhead fans in summer, Sanders lunch counter with tuna sandwiches wrapped in wax paper. At Outer Drive were a hardware store, The Alger Theater, the Library that replaced the store sized library next to DeLue's, a drugstore where TV tubes could be tested and purchased and nearby was Alinosi's Ice Cream a sit down parlor.

Above the zone 24 [[48224) Post Office was Dr. Seth's dental office where no pain killers were offered and Dr. Seth would burrow into my teeth with fat drill bits that would slow down when he pressed hard. There was an elm outside the window on Warren that would blow in the wind. No air conditioners meant the window was open. The elm was sort of an escape from the pain. Dr. Seth would snap at me to sit still.

Wasn't it 'Ray Kopitski's'? Sometimes the family would go to Kopitski's for Sunday dinners. Once, my Dad and Aunt were fighting over the check. My aunt reached over too far trying to get ahold of the bill and fell on the floor. The place was full. She was horribly embarrassed.

I got into a fistfight in Maple Lanes once. I was in a Sat. morning bowling league. One fellow hit me. I responded in kind, ripping his cheek. A friend, who years later moved to California and became a Hell's Angel, told everyone in school on Monday how the other fellow's head had bobbled. Good times!

Balduck Park is a topic in itself. The unheated shed where everyone changed their skates. Shooting arrows to see how far they would go when no one was around, getting sunburns there, sledding and tobogganing. a friend lighting smoke bombs under the City of Detroit band and seeing the smoke come up by the tuba players. Police asking us afterwards if we knew who did it. Twice getting into fights with older kids where one person held me and the other punched me. I lost both fights. Later, a place to 'park' on Friday nights. A police car would go by with flashing lights 15" before everyone had to be out of the park.

The family shopped at Allemon's and Verdonkt's. My grandmother dispatched me on my bicycle to buy raisin bread at Verdonk's. I asked for 'kukabrood'[[sp?) which is what the family called it. The lady behind the counter responded in Flemish. I only knew a few words of Flemish, some not polite, so it was my turn to be embarrassed.

What's a discussion about E. Warren without mentioning the E. Warren bus that connected to the Crosstown bus and the Gratiot streetcar? Eventually, the bus became great fun with friends and pea shooters to shoot in car windows and at pedestrians from the back of the bus.

We always called Pete's Tavern the No-Name Bar because the sign out front was broken. Spent many an interesting evening in there.
The other place we spent some time in was Penny Lanes, a very old-timey bowling alley/bar, but it was farther west, I believe on the corner of Bedford. Very friendly place.

The Saber Lancer on Warren just east of Outer Drive. Best burger in town. Good fish fry on Friday too.

Some of the places mentioned above must have been before my time...late 60s through the 70s...as I do not recall them at all when i was growing up on Three Mile Drive.

Warren at Three Mile Drive: A&P, Laundromat, Arthur Treacher's. Continuing east, some of the businesses...DeRonne Hardware, Mediterranean Lounge, A&K Oriental [[where we bought popsicles and baklava!), Kresge's, Sanders, Cunningham's, men's wear, dance wear, Alger Theatre. Past E Outer Drive...Sabre Lancer Lounge [[next to the post office), Standard Federal bank, dance studio [[2nd floor), Sybil's beauty school, Manufacturers Bank, Mr C's, The Clock. Past Cadieux...Lambardi's, East Warren Bowling, Pointe BBQ, Burger King, Carom Club, K of C Credit Union, Club 500 [[best pizza around!), Dairy Queen, Allemon's, Gabriel Richard K of C, bowling alley, Balduck Park, Austin High School.

That's a trip down memory lane!!

The original Cal's pizzera, Sal was the pizza chef. It was just a block or two down from the Red Carpet, didn't that place burn down then reopen on Harper?

I have a Cal's matchbook, too. Probably older than yours. I worked for Torchy Scullen '72 - '73. My first bartending job. A lot of interesting regulars. He started the pizza and salads during my tenure there. Cal's moved to Harper, but I don't know when.

Also, my dentist was on the corner of Bedford and E. Warren, and I had relatives on Courville. This was not my neighborhood, but I seem to have a lot of connection to it, including the Red Carpet and the Alger.

Thank you Kathleen. You are a bit younger than I am so I don't remember some places you mentioned. I couldn't remember that it was a Cunningham store or that the dime store was Kresge's but did remember that the dance studio was Arthur Murrey's. Could that have been in the Post Office building? The Kresge's I believe it had wooden floors and overhead fans. I would bicycle to that Dairy Queen with friends but I was always the only one who didn't shell out 35 cents for a cone because I was saving money at Standard Federal. What was the name of the bank on the NE corner or 3 Mile and Warren? Piston/Knicks' Dave DeBusschere played for Austin High and lived on Courville nearer to Mack. Coincidence, but Roger DeMeyere, a good high school BB player, LHE, and friend also lived on Courville and Waveney before becoming CEO of the national Lutheran Special services Ministry. There was also a barber shop just off of Warren at 4904 Courville.

Did anyone mention Pointe BBQ? Best ribs and sauce ever. Maybe that was later after they moved from Mack near 8 Mile

The dance studio I remember was on the block between Kensington and Yorkshire, north side. It was on the second floor. I never went there but know of it as it was above my dad's sporting goods store. In the 1980s, Dad ran Quest Officials Supplies and Soccer Specialists there.

If you spent 35 cents for a cone at the Dairy Queen, you must have been ordering the large cone dipped. I remember the small cones at 10 cents! My parents would pile us five kids into the car, stop at DQ for cones, and then go for a drive along Lakeshore Road, heading south to take Jefferson to downtown Detroit.

Dave DeBusschere did live on Courville just north of Rosewood. Looking at the street view, I think his house has been demolished.

Of course I should have mentioned the Jefferson Branch of the Detroit Public Library on East Outer Drive just off E Warren, behind the Alger Theatre. I spent countless hours there hunting for books to read when I was in elementary school and doing homework when I was in high school.

I know there are some earlier threads on this topic. Here's one of them:

Kathleen, I did open that link and realized that I had forgotten the name of Cunningham's and "Jefferson" Library over the last 15 years. I was a block off about Arthur Murrays which you remembered.

Semi related but about 10 years ago I researched everyone who graduated from 8th grade with me at Peace Luth. School at 15700 E. Warren. I came up with about 54 names and tracked down about 70% of them. I made a map of where they now lived 50 years later. About 60% of these people who were still alive and mostly from 48224 had grown up and moved to the St. Clair Shores - Clinton Township area. None still lived in Detroit. The other 40% had scattered across Michigan or other states. I assume graduation classes from Catholic school or Clark or Marquette would have a similar result.

Cal's was great - their antipasto salad was fantastic - big cubes of meat and cheese and a home-made dressing.

There was a place right next to Bedford Inn - a pizza place called Zeno's Pizza - it was delivery/pickup only. They sold what would now be called "Brooklyn Style" foldable pizza. We lived on that stuff as kids - when Mom didn't want to cook, we always ordered from them.

GR Charles- Pete [[Guns) was my uncle. His dad rented a space on the opposite corner for a bar. The owner kicked up his rent too high so he built the place known as Petes Tavern. Pete ran it forever and sold it to his son Chuck. HE ran it for years and sold it some guy named Jay? Bar then took a dive and is currently falling apart. Owner of repair shop has it now. No plans as of yet. If you got pics let me know!!
