    Freep Film Festival
This 10th annual version of the event produced by the Detroit Free Press has nearly 40 documentaries showing at various venues. The four-day festival with in-person and virtual at-home screenings features films with a strong connection to the issues and people tied to Detroit and Michigan.

In-depth discussions take place after many films to encourage conversations that spin off issues raised on-screen.
The festival runs through Sunday. Venues include the Detroit Film Theatre at the Detroit Institute of Arts, three theaters at the Michigan Science Center, the Detroit Historical Museum and Frame in Hazel Park. Tickets to most inperson screenings are $15; tickets for virtual screenings are $12.

April is Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month, and Utica is marking it with a puppy parade. Pets of all ages are welcome, and more than 20 organizations will be participating.
Fire and police department vehicles will escort the parade through its conclusion at Pioneer Park, where attendees can visit rescue and vendor tents. The event starts at 2 p.m. Saturday and begins at Grant Park.

Walk-up registration at the zoo is 7-8:30 a.m. Saturday. Participants must enter the zoo by 9 a.m. Those who cannot attend in person can register as a virtual walker for $25.
