High-end brands Balenciaga, Breitling open at Somerset Collection

Another globally-recognized, high-end luxury retailer has chosen Somerset Collection for its first store in Michigan.Spanish brand Balenciaga opened a 3,600-square-foot store in the Troy mall last month. Founded in 1919 by designer Cristóbal Balenciaga in San Sebastian, Spain, and based in Paris, Balenciaga sells clothing, shoes, bags, accessories, jewelry and glasses. The Troy store — on the first level of Somerset South between Versace and bag maker MCM — is the company's 39th U.S. location.
Somerset Collection South in recent months also added Gucci's first men's store and a store from outerwear brand Moncler. The north side of the mall that straddles Big Beaver Road added Swiss watch retailer Breitling earlier this year in a 700-square-foot ground floor space near Pandora. A celebration to mark the opening of Breitling's first boutique in the Detroit area is scheduled for March 28.

Never heard of the first one.

Tappers Jewlers at Somerset sells Breitlings.

I wonder how they were able to open a store there when they already have a retailer selling them in the mall? Usually there would be an agrement in place preventing that.

At one time at Sommerset, there were two standalone Armani stores, while Nieman Marcus and Sak's also sold Armani. There's also a standalone Ralph Lauren store while Macy's has a sectioned-off Ralph Lauren section in their store. Ditto Brooks Brothers and Tommy Bahama and Nordstrom for a while, though Brooks Brothers is now closed.

I think the sale contracts with the department stores allow for manufacturers to open up their own stores. In other words, if Saks wants to carry Armani, they can't prevent an Armani store from opening in the same mall per their contract. From what I've seen, they try to carry different merchandise so they aren't stepping on each other's toes.
