It is required. I don't know why people with insurance can't opt out but I suspect that it is due to Michigan's no fault policies.

You can elect to coordinate your PIP if you have medical insurance. I'd be careful about lying about it or misrepresnting yourself. Last thing you want is to be caught in a lie if you're laying in a hospital bed with tens of thousands in bills to save on your insurance bill. [[Definitely a penny wise, pound foolish act)

PIP is a required part of Michigan no-fault auto insurance. It generally covers a lot more than your health insurance, like 85% of lost wages for up to 3 years. You're also covered under PIP if you're injured while a passenger in a car or if you're a pedestrian hit by a car. Upper benefit limit is I believe a million $.
