Default SMART: Oakland, Wayne, Macomb back transit taxes

Voters across Metro Detroit signed off Tuesday on millages to support the SMART transportation system.

Oakland County voters approved a 0.95-mill, 10-year property tax proposal aimed at connecting the county's regional transportation system and ending the ability of local communities to opt out of it.

The proposal got a 57% yes vote to 43% no with all precincts reporting Wednesday afternoon, according to unofficial results.

For Oakland County's County wide millage proposal [[Just like Macomb County) will be an excellent ideal to possibly bring new SMART bus routes to Novi, Milford, Commerce TWP. and even Rochester and Rochester Hills.

This is to end the controversial Auburn Hills City Council and other OC cities to opt in or out of SMART bus transportation.

Wayne County must do the same.

Auburn Hills council was flat-out wrong. Transportation won on the ballot in every single Auburn Hills precinct.

I had not noticed a park and ride bus downtown that will take riders from downtown Detroit to Farmington Hills

I wish that SMART will be allowed to have busses such as the 610 Kercheval/Harper resume traveling to downtown Detroit up until 8:00pm before Detroit City Council had put a stop to it

Did city council put a stop to it, or did SMART stop it in order to redirect resources elsewhere?

Detroit City Council didn't vote to opt out SMART. However, the Detroit City Council request to put limited daytime and evening times for all SMART busses coming in or out of Detroit after 2010. After the pandemic, SMART so far will not do some Detroit routes for 610, 200, 125, 450, 460 until further notice.

Detroit had its own public transportation for years. Detroit City government wanted to keep the ridership filled.

The FAST routes already travel into the city, restriction-free, at all times every day, so I highly doubt the 200/210, 450/460 and 560 will resume downtown service any time soon.

The 125 and the 610 have no FAST equivalents, so whether they'll resume downtown service is still up in the air.

Speaking of SMART, I had noticed when Dan Dirks left SMART for DDOT DDOT's services had improved 75% especially the services for the handicap and the elderly. The city council had voted now to cut to a minimum the special services for the handicap and elderly. This probably would not had happened if Dirk was still director of DDOT instead of the the clueless director that currently is there
