Default Stellantis unit pleads guilty, will pay $300M in U.S. diesel probe

There needs to a separate ring in hell for the corporate crooks at Stellantis / FCA. First they corrupt the UAW. Meanwhile this far bigger money-wise thievery is going on.

[[Reuters) -The U.S. business of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles pleaded guilty to criminal conspiracy on Friday and will pay about $300 million in a plea agreement to resolve a multi-year U.S. Justice Department diesel emissions fraud probe, court documents show.

FCA US LLC, now part of Stellantis, will pay about $300 million in criminal penalties arising from its efforts to evade emissions requirements for more than 100,000 older Ram pickup trucks and Jeep sport-utility vehicles in its U.S. lineup.

“FCA US engaged in a multi-year scheme to mislead U.S. regulators and customers,” said Assistant Attorney General Kenneth Polite, adding the department will hold “accountable companies that seek to place profits above candor, good corporate governance, and timely remediation.”

U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds in Detroit set a July 18 sentencing date. The settlement includes a $203.6 million forfeiture penalty and a $96.1 million fine. The government noted FCA US previously paid a $311 million civil penalty and paid over $183 million in compensation to over 63,000 people as part of a class-action diesel lawsuit.

    FCA yeah.

The Dodge system was WAY simpler than the VW one.

The VW one used steering angle and other sensors to determine if it was on a dyno, and then switch to a compliant tuning if it was.

The Dodge system just had a timer that turned the emissions Urea system off after 6 minutes or so. That being roughly how long an emission test cycle was.

So if you did a lot of short trips, you used the expected amount of Urea, but if you drove a lot on the freeway, you used hardly any.

I couldn't believe when the VW thing dropped that the Dodge one didn't also. It was common knowledge in Detroit. I was waiting for the story to appear in the paper any day. But it took like 7 years.

So much for the Pentastar. I wonder what Lee Iacocca should do?

It shows how much inflation has kicked in

General Motors agreed reluctantly Thursday to recall 470,000 Cadillacs equipped with what the government called a ``defeat device″ that caused the cars to emit three times more carbon monoxide than the law allows.
In what the Justice Department said was the first court-ordered recall and the largest automobile case brought under the Clean Air Act, GM must pay an $11 million fine _ the second-largest civil penalty assessed under the act.
