Default Detroit Night on Broadway fetes Dominque Morriseau

Friday night saw a Detroit extravaganza on Broadway when many homeowners including Mayor Duggan packed a performance of "Skeleton Crew", a Detroit-themed play filled with references to the D, to celebrate its playwright Detroit native Dominique Morisseau, a Tony Award nominee and MacArthur Genius. She is the first Black woman to have two shows she wrote running on Broadway simultaneously, the other being Temptations musical “Ain't Too Proud".

Next month, Morisseau will become the first Black woman to have three plays she wrote on Broadway during the same season; after “Skeleton Crew” closes Feb. 20, “Confederates,” about racial and gender bias explored through the eyes of two women, debuts March 8.

“Skeleton Crew” star Chanté Adams, is a native of Detroit and a proud graduate of Cass Technical High School. “This 27-year-old represents a performance and creative legacy in Detroit that's deep and rich and has for a century sent people to Broadway,” said Mayor Duggan in a preshow address lauding the Detroiters.

What a great new chapter to Detroit's rich history in the arts and entertainment!
