Many local artists know him as a teacher as he taught art at Wayne State University for more than 20 years.

    From his website:

John passed away at age 81 last week on October 19 in New York.

He is being remembered by many....

I'd like to add my kudos to John who, beside being a great artist, teacher, and fellow handball player, was a great friend and gentle giant. He was a key figure in establishing the budding Detroit Art Scene of the late 1960's, centered around the Willis Gallery and in elevating the Wayne State art department to prominence. He would bring his classes by my and other artists studios to show them the real world of working artists. Then he walked the walk by tossing the security of his job as head of the WSU painting department for the uncertainties of being an independent artist. Picture of John in his studio in 1982.
