Default Councilman Spivey pleads guilty to bribery and will resign

"Andre Spivey became the second Detroit city councilman this year to plead guilty to a public corruption charge, admitting on Tuesday in federal court that he took $35,900 in bribes from an undercover law enforcement agent and a confidential FBI source in exchange for wielding his political influence.

"Spivey, who served on the council for nearly a dozen years, accepted the bribes in exchange for his assistance with a pending vehicle towing ordinance before the Detroit City Council, he said in court."
    ...
"He is the second Detroit council member to plead guilty to a felony this year.

"Former Detroit Councilman Gabe Leland was sentenced to 2 1/ 2 years probation for state misconduct in office. Leland pleaded guilty in May to felony misconduct in office and resigned from Detroit City Council.

We're about to get a whole new city council. All the corrupt people are leaving, so we should really celebrate more than anything else.

They said the same thing when the city filed for bankruptcy and council by district became a thing.

I hope you're right about that, but I doubt it.

Here's a whole podcast series about corruption in Detroit. I highly recommend it.

The only way things will change is when they do enough time to outweigh the petty scams... I read that he's facing 5 years in prison and up to a $250,000 fine. Stop with the slap on the wrist sentences, give him 3-5 years and at least $100,000 fine and publicize it... then maybe some of the other crooks will think twice.

First Gabe Leland and Anton Spivey.

Good job for the FBI watching those criminals like a hawk.

This is why I believe that Council by District was a bad idea from the start. It gives each council person too much power to determine what goes on in their districts and the control of money allocated to his or hers district.
