I miss giving the theatre tours... the Fillmore State has been gloriously restored back in late 2018, the venue wasn't available for the tours in 2019 [due to a scheduled function], and in 2020 was cancelled due to pandemic. The 2021 tour was cancelled because the downtown venues weren't yet open for business.

So the restored Fillmore/State, which has 90 years of nicotine removed from the auditorium surfaces, a re-gilded dome and sidewalls, re-marbled columns, and new painted panel sidewalls of Tuscan bucolic settings, hasn't yet been shown via the theatre tours.

Kathleen - Is the tour just once a year? We've walked thru the cemetery on many occasions but it's been years. I would like to drag hubby to a tour.

^^ The Preservation Detroit cemetery tours are held only in October. Each Saturday of the month [[always 4, sometimes 5). We cover Elmwood, Mount Elliott, Mount Olivet, and Woodlawn. This year we offered 6 tours across the 5 Saturdays. All sold out!

Elmwood Cemetery offers a monthly tour, but they just concluded their 2021 tours.

Best bet is to make a note for 2022...start checking Preservation Detroit and Elmwood Cemetery websites for their tour schedule.

Kathleen, as a Preservation Detroit member, even I need to take some of the cemetery tours. I have driven through Elmwood and Mt. Elliott cemeteries many times, and even without a guide, they are a wonderful drive.

The drive thru "the valley" in Elmwood with all the mausoleums along the hillsides is an amazing drive... it reminds me of the "Dark Shadows" Gothic soap opera of decades ago... you almost expect Barnabas Collins to come out of one of the ancient hillside tombs. It's one of the few places in Detroit where you really feel like you are nowhere near Detroit.

One cemetery I have never been to is Woodlawn Cemetery... with the Egyptian mausoleum of the Dodge brothers, the graves of many of the Fords, and the final resting place of Rosa Parks and Aretha Franklin.

    So much history!!

Looking forward to next year's theatre tours... for the Fillmore/State it will have been a 3 year hiatus of not showing that theatre since the 2018 restoration. The 2022 theatre tour will be the first with the Fillmore being completely restored.

I'm looking forward to giving tours of that theatre. Learned something new about that historic theatre that has had more renames than any other downtown theatre. In the 1920s theatre impressario John Kunsky leased the State out to Loew's/MGM owner Marcus Loew. And even though it was never labeled as a Loew's theatre... in all MGM movie ads in Detroit newspapers, it was called the "Loew's State".
