Default Detroit's Expectations of President Biden...

Meanwhile back at the ranch: Detroit [[expectations from incoming Biden)

Black Voters Expect Strong Policies, Not Just Applause, From Biden

Thirty percent of people in Detroit are below the poverty line. When the Biden administration says "build back better," what does that actually look like in your city?
For Detroiters, one of the places that we start when we talk about "build back better" is access to more living wage jobs, making sure that we're able to increase the federal minimum wage...

He should build everybody a new house. It seems both sides have decided not to even pretend to care about debt any more.

Between his immigration politics and his minimum wage to $15 and his virus policy all on first day he will bury any small business left in the city!

None of these will do any healing of the public. He also plans to rollback Trumps tax relief and that will equal a tax raise no matter how you look at it!

Federal legislation increased the minimum wage from $4.25 to $4.75 on October 1, 1996 and to $5.15 on September 1, 1997.
The principal findings are that:* The 1996 and 1997 minimum wage increases raised the wages of almost 10 million workers. About 71% of these workers were adults and 58% were women. Just under half [[46%) worked full time and another third worked 20 to 34 hours per week.

    * The average minimum wage worker is responsible for providing more than half [[54%) of his or her family’s weekly earnings.

    * The two-stage increase disproportionately benefited low-income working households. Although households in the bottom 20% of the income distribution [[whose average income is $15,728) receive only 5% of total family income, they received 35% of the benefits from the minimum wage increase.
1996-97 increase in the minimum wage has proven to be an effective tool for raising the earnings of low-wage workers without lowering their employment opportunities.

I would hope he expands/makes easier legal immigration so we can continue to grow out immigrant population in and around the city.

I hope he follows through with a strong emphasis on transportation infrastructure to allow the Amtrak corridor to be modernized and possible expand transit options in the city.

An emphasis on EV's would benefit the cities automakers and expand technology jobs in the area.

An emphasis on clean energy and cutting down on pollution may hurt certain industries, but will help keep our natural resources clean. Maybe a few superfund sites get cleaned up.

Ray LaHood who served as transportation secretary under Obama was the most public transportation cheerleader in Washington that we saw in many many years, instrumental in helping to bring the Q line in and setting the groundwork for the Amtrak link corridor.

It would be nice if he was brought back in order to take it to the next level, but he does not fit the profile anymore, maybe if public transportation was painted green it would become a priority again.

Biden has a log career as a pro-corporate Democrat, so I don't expect any radical change from him [[despite the ridiculous 1950s-style "commie" blather coming from the righty seditious nutballs). Indeed, I expect there will be significant resistance from his administration and its allies to many of the initiatives of the progressive wing, and pressure for significant compromise from them on other fronts, like preservation and reform of the ACA or immigration reform.

Right now though I would gladly settle for some quick and significant assertive action on Covid. Especially full federal funding and coordination of a truly wide-scale mass vaccination effort.

most of your historic posts are negative so I'm not surprised by this one and no direct response is called for.

Can you explain how he's wrong? Biden's literal words are "nothing will fundamentally change".

I expect nothing as well. It's just another rapist in the white house.

Biden of course doesn't have this power .......... but I'm sure MANY Detroiters wish he could "un-pardon" Kwame Kilpatrick.

Ugh, a wonderful parting gift from the outgoing President.

^^^ For some [[KK Supporters) it will hard one for Biden to top, at the symbolic local level. If Kilpatrick's smart he should lay low and stay away from the Mitten state and the D!

Here's a very brief video on that subject.

Can Pardons Be Revoked or Rescinded?

Hybridy's links had to do with the benefits of raising the minimum wage. However, without tariffs to protect $15/hour jobs, there will in the relatively short run be the sucking sound of jobs being sent to Asia and Mexico where wages are much cheaper.

Two plusses of having $15/hour wages are that it will push some into higher income brackets so they can pay more taxes. Two $15/hour workers will have a family income of $60,000. That's taxable. Also, $60,000/year families will not qualify for so many government programs and subsidies. We could get rid of some social workers and other government workers who deal with poverty. $15/hour could mean government income and savings.

In the long run, $15/hour wages will spur the development of labor saving devices. Expect to scan more of your own groceries, have self driving trucks, self order kiosks, more automated phone calls, etc..That's bad for $15/hour jobs but increases national productivity which helps hold down prices. If the automation and robotization equipment is made in this Country, home higher paying jobs will offset lost lower paying $15/hour jobs.

$15/hour wages might also be good for some family owned businesses that keep their own payrolls and put their kids to work. They might have a lower wage advantage if they don't report family members' hours correctly. Joe Biden wants to give up to 22.2M illegal aliens access to Americans' jobs and social benefits so there will be more competition for a lot of those $15/hour jobs and loans for starting up businesses. To the extent that Joe Biden will expand immigration, there will be downward pressure on U.S. wages and salaries offset by demand for more infrastructure e.g. wider roads, more housing, and resource extraction.

So there are pros and cons to $15/hour wages. I nominally support the wage increase but would insist that there be some tariffs to protect some of those jobs. Also, it would be a good idea to have a slightly lower wage for students so they could get some work experience and pay of some of their educational expenses.

Wasn't a pardon; was a commutation. Means he was let out of jail, but he is still convicted of his crimes.

Biden will have the same challenges as Trump did when it comes to the federal government dictating to the states,he can create policies and offer suggestions but at the end of the day,he cannot force the states to do anything.

    as with every other president.

Read this one Jaime A. Davidson.

Still was in prison for 29 years, even after the one that actually did the crime was convicted and served his sentence and was released.

    Insane.

Susan Rosenberg has served as vice chair of the board of directors for Thousand Currents, an organization that provides fundraising and fiscal sponsorship for the Black Lives Matter Global Movement. She was an active member of revolutionary left-wing movements whose illegal activities included bombing U.S. government buildings and committing armed robberies.

She was pardoned by Bill Clinton at the request of Democrat Adler, who pushed the impeachment of Trump.

She was caught with 17 pounds of dynamite as she was heading to the White House to blow it up.

Good to see she went on to live a productive life in the Marxist funding and values of BLM that spent the summer destroying cities while others protested in good cause.

Goes to show that the current capital building case is not the most unprecedented action in our history.

There was a time when blowing up government buildings was the mantra.

I guess Adler figured she might come in handy in the future if they ever wanted to use violence in the future in order to dictate policy.

The camera panned to bill Clinton who is falling asleep during Biden’s speech, opps

Details you didn't mention include that Susan Rosenberg is a communist and that Thousand Currents handles money for the largest Black Lives Matter organization. Money sent to BLM gets cashed by the DNC and passes the money on to Thousand Currents. Very little of that money goes to local chapters of BLM. However, Thousand Currents does seem to do some work for BLM. BLM cannot be sued if and when its peaceful gatherings turn into riots because Thousand Currents holds and spend BLM money.

Hey, where’s all the enthusiasm for your President select? Already turning on him? Remember, he’s literally the most popular guy in human history and I’m sure he’ll be rewarding Detroit folks for their complicity. I’m not holding my breath. You own it now.

And what is going to happen in the media, during the Obama administration they almost disappeared because you can only fluff somebody up so much.

Trump hate made them relevant again, they are going to have to create new enemies in order to create a 24/7 platform of spreading hate based on fake and false accusations.
