Default Flint closing gas stations & liquor stores at 9 P.M. -- should Detroit too?

Sam Riddle has been talking about this story all week on 910AM and Facebook. High volume of calls and responses from Detroit residents say they wish our council and Duggan would do the same!

Too much crime, too much late-night chaos at and around all these stores. Past few days there was a homicide at a Detroit gas station at 11:30pm and a fatal hit-and-run at 10:30pm at another.

Flint considers curbing late-night hours of liquor, corner stores to stem crime

Rising crime is prompting Flint leaders to consider curtailing late-night hours for liquor stores and convenience shops.

Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley said crime is on the upswing and cites issues including the pandemic and shops that sell alcohol in low-to-moderate income areas, which he calls "multipliers" of violent crime and criminal activity.

What is this, the resurgence of the 1950s blue laws?

That's a great ideal. A way to deter crime. But the problem is. Since America is a 24hr business culture. People still to fill-er up. during the night.

Flint is a city of less than 100,000 people.

Detroit is a city on an international border that's home to at least 6 times the amount of people and anchors a metro area of 4.2 million people.

What may work in Flint isn't necessarily practical in a city the scale of Detroit.

We're the no. 1 most dangerous major city in the U.S. Why do liquor stores have to be open late? They do nothing but fuel crime, chaos and poison families. Several entire states close down liquor stores at 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Couldn't agree more. In those exact words. If you're offended, you have no business in SE Michigan.

Lol, I 100% agree with this sentiment, but I've never experienced this as badly as *in* SE Michigan. Same reason we can't get our act together with transit, virtually zero speed enforcement on the freeways, etc. Cars reign supreme here, and street racing is just one more vestige of the culture.

If people want to stop racing in the cities, then they need to pressure lawmakers to make it so that it's not so easy to race in the city. Law enforcement is a bandaid. I'm talking rational speed limits, encouraging higher density development, transit policies, and narrower streets. And of course...speed enforcement cameras, but those would never take hold here...personal liberties are too important

Bars and taverns would be in favor. Drunk driving rates would go through the roof.

    Correct.

And since the other forum was closed, I'll have to leave it at that.
