WWJ wasn't just first in Detroit. Depending on how you slice things, it was the first commercial broadcaster in the U.S., though when it went on the air that Aug. 20 a century back, it was probably picked up by only a few dozen households in possession of what was, at the time, shockingly high-tech radio equipment.

In 1920 Station H8 became WWJ Radio. In 1948 The company started WWJ TV NBC 4 in Downtown Detroit on the corner of W Lafayette and Third St. [[Now The NABET Union Building) in 1970s The company broke away from WWJ by Post Newsweek Stations and change its CALL letters to WDIV NBC TV 4 and later by Detroit News and Free Press which its later owned by Garnett Station. WDIV TV 4 NEVER left Detroit. It been here from good times and bad. And WWJ will be the beacon of radio news for our changing times.

Welcome back, Pam & Danny. You were both missed. I hope you're healthy.

Every once in a while someone suggests trying to imagine what life was like before the internet. Imagine living without TV or even radio! They wouldn't have felt deprived since they didn't know any better. I guess they just picked up their daily newspaper and thought that's as good as it would ever get.

It makes me wonder what surprises are on the horizon for us today.
