Default Grad student seeking interviews with Detroit residents about Project Green Light

    Hi, DetroitYES! community.

I am a doctoral candidate at the University of Illinois at Chicago [[and WSU alum) looking to chat with Detroit residents [[18+) about their impressions of/experiences with Project Green Light for a study on the social, political, and economic implications of police surveillance. Given present circumstances, I have few options beyond approaching folks online, so thanks in advance for accommodating.

Interviews will take place online [[Zoom, Skype, or whatever platform you are comfortable with) and last approximately 30 minutes [[depending on responses). Participants who complete the interview will have an opportunity to win one of six, $25 Visa gift cards. Responses will be kept anonymous/confidential, and informed consent information will be provided prior to the interview.

If you or someone you know is willing/interested in participating, please send me a private message and I will provide additional info/answer any questions you might have.

    Thanks in advance!

I just heard an interesting related story on WWJ News Radio.

State Police unveil new program using traffic cam footage to catch freeway shooting suspects
“We had gotten some information from gang members that, with the Green Light cameras all over the city, it was easier for them to target their victims on the freeway,” [First Lieutenant Mike] Shaw told WWJ’s Sandra McNeill....

Meanwhile, [MSP] have all but lost count of the number of freeway shootings in Metro Detroit in 2020....

“Society’s ability to kind of de-escalate things has kind of gone away this year,” Shaw said....

About half of the freeway shootings have been solved.
The MDOT change was that they're now recording the images. So the good news is the MDOT cameras are helping to solve cases. The bad news is the Green Light Program cameras just moved the problem away from businesses. I suspect the MDOT cameras will eventually move the problem away from freeways.

Is anyone trying to address the underlying causes of conflict?

The best fascist countries don't use public utilities to surveil their populace, they contract with private entities who bribe generously for the privilege and are free to install cameras and every other sensor, facial recognition software, and mass data mining without public scrutiny -- all in the name of efficiency [[the outsourcing) and safety or personalization [[the tracking).
