Default Eastpointe elects its first Afro-American mayor

Congratulations to Mayor-elect Owens and Eastpointe. Another chapter in the demographic shift of Metro Detroit has been written.
The city of Eastpointe made history Tuesday, electing its first black mayor and using a new voting method to elect two people to City Council.

Winning the mayor's spot was Councilwoman Monique Owens, who was the city's first black councilwoman when she was elected two years ago. She garnered 19 more votes than her closest opponent, Councilman Michael Klinefelt, according to unofficial results. Brian Fairbrother, assistant city manager and deputy city clerk, said Klinefelt can ask for a recount with the close vote, but he said he has not heard any discussion of a recount for the mayoral election.

Owens, who was a Wayne County Sheriff's officer per her Facebook page, would replace longtime Mayor Suzanne Pixley, who is retiring.

...The mayor was elected in the traditional, atlarge voting method, while the council seats were decided by a new ranked choice voting method used for the first time.

Earlier this year, the city entered into an agreement with U.S. Department of Justice to settle a 2017 voting rights lawsuit that challenged the method of electing the City Council.

The department alleged the method of voting for council resulted in black citizens in the city having less opportunity than white citizens to participate in the political process and elect candidates of their choice to the council.

The demographic shift is black people bailing on the city of Detroit. Just call it what it is. Flight out of Detroit that has been going strong for 70 years now.

You lose by 19 votes and don't want a recount?

There is a change in city/suburban demographic trends by race. From Census 2010 to July 2018, according to Census Bureau estimates, the
city's substantial African-American population declined by 14 percent while the city's rather small non-Hispanic white population grew by 31 percent.
In the three county suburban ring, the white population fell by 5% while
the African American population grew by 16%.

The African American population of the ring grew by 57,000 while the
city's African American population fell by 83,000. For whites, there
was a growth of 17,000 in the city of Detroit and a decline of 127,000 in the ring.

Racial attitudes have change and there is a substantial movement of African-Americans from the city to the suburbs. For the most part, the
patterns of extreme white black residential segregation that once
characterized Detroit are not being repeated in the suburbs,

I have a feeling he meant to say the white pop. declined in the inner ring suburbs and therefore they have moved to the outer ring/exurbs.

The data about change in the suburban ring refer to the suburbs in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne County. However, the state of Michigan
continues to lose on its exchange of population with other states. In
addition, compared to the rest of the country, Michigan is a high mortality, low fertility state so our population seems destined to decrease in the future bringing with it numerous economic challenges.

In many ways the spectacular decline of Detroit in the second half of the 20th C was a harbinger of the broader story for Metro Detroit and Michigan. The ships on both sides of Eight Mile were sinking but the one to south was so dramatic that the other ships weren't sensing their decline.

Black folks moved to Eastpointe by a heavy influx since the early 1990s. I remember the time when I went cruising in the pointes to Eastland Mall in the early 1990s with my dad, cousin and sister where not only Harper Woods was 97% white East Detroit now Eastpointe was 98% white. So was the some parts of Northeast Detroit in Mohican Regent was about 92% white.

When black folks mostly from Detroit were moving quickly moving to Eastpointe neighborhoods in the early 1990s they were mostly buying homes north of E. 8 Mile Rd. from Gratiot Ave. to Kelly Rd. further up to Toepfer St. Now there are NOT black folks living on welfare checks and food stamps. These are middle class black folks with paying jobs. I check it myself and I even was thinking about moving to on Collison St. near Beaconsfield St. near the St. Clair Shores border north of E. 8 Mile Rd. and Vernier Ave. But my gut feeling says no. So I moved to a small town far far away.

Michigan consistently loses population in its exchange with other states. In addition, Michigan is a low fertility/high mortality state compared to other states. The decrease of 110,000 white residents of the three county suburban ring is not surprising. Some retirees moved away and other
younger people moved in search of better opportunities. There appear to be few places in Michigan attracting in-migrants from other states. Job growth is very slow in Michigan which limits immigration to the state. New employment opportunities in and near downtown Detroit may lead to some in-migration from other states in the city.

It's shuffling chairs, the metro area has near the same population for many decades now. It's growing now albeit slowly. we could really benefit from better land use.

The majority of the 110,000 didn't go to other states. And you're describing the entire northeastern US. Illinois and New York in particular are in population free fall at least Michigan still grows. Even California is suffering from the maturing effect. It really reaffirms how important immigration is to this country.

Some of what you're saying is just wrong. Job growth in the state's two biggest cities are not slow. It's actually pretty great growth.

I'm curious how anybody could calculate suburban ring since it has no definition or defined boundary.

I think there is a break in the calculations somewhere. If outer Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb have declined in white population by 110,000, that almost certainly means that Michigan would have declined in population, unless there were a ton of non-whites to come in and replace them. But the ACS estimates that Michigan has grown by over 100,000 since 2010.

According to the ACS estimates, only Wayne County has declined in population, by about 67,000 people, and that would include Detroit's 41,000 population decline. Oakland and Macomb have grown by roughly 90,000, so there is a surplus of about 65-70K people in the suburban counties ring when you net against suburban Wayne's loss. But if the suburban ring is down 110,000 fewer white people, then that means all of that 65-70K growth in population is non-white, plus another 110,000 non-white people to replace the whites who left/died off. So there are about 180,000 new non-white people in Metro Detroit. While possible, I'm very, very, very skeptical. This would mean that the white share of the tri-county has dropped by over 5% in a decade. That seems like it would be pretty noticeable.

How have racial attitudes changed? Now whites are bailing on Harper Woods and Eastpointe. [[For good reason? Maybe)

What is more plausible, is that what happened to Oak Park and Southfield and in 80's and 90's will happen to Redford, Eastpointe, Harper Woods, Warren, Roseville, and St. Clair Shores. i.e. more of the same racial segregation, this time across suburban boundaries instead of 8 Mile.

What would be the good reason ? Because Blacks are moving in? Blacks are moving to a lot of areas, once unheard of. West Bloomfield and Bloomfield Hills, has increased black populations. Just pushes the whites that want to leave, further north.

My guess is that 3% other had a lot to do with the outcome of the election.
