Windsor Approves New Transportation Plan

Windsor approved a new transportation plan last month.

The plan sets an ambitious target of more than doubling the share of non-car trips [[walking, cycling and transit) from 10% to 25% by 2041.

The plan is basically to install bike lanes and keep sidewalks in good repair.

Which isn't a bad thing but I was expecting there to be improved or reworked bus routes.

Also who knows what will actually happen. I find this funny:

Windsor mayor Drew Dilkens dismissed any concerns council isn’t fully behind the new plan.

“There's no worry that the political will won't be there. I think the worry is that there's never enough money to do everything that you want to do,” said Dilkens.

Political will = prioritizing funding for an issue. If something was free you would need no political will to implement it because it's free. They currently spend $2-3 million per year on this stuff and the proposal would raise that to $6.2 million per year, some of which would be offset by other sources. If you can't scrape together $3 million per year for something "momentous" that is supposed to "transform" your city, then there is no political will.

There are major changes coming to Windsor Transit [[based on proposals moving forward)

There would be a complete realignment of routes to make them much more grid-like.

There are also plans for more service and for heated bus shelters.

Worth adding here......ridership is already growing substantially..........it was up 22% in 2018.

That's outstanding then, I really think those improvements will [[and have already!) make a difference.

The nice thing about cities the size of Windsor is that it's very possible to provide complete transit coverage across the entire city, because it's compact enough.

University Avenue will be completely redone soon where we should see some of these plans at work.

The whole transit system is going to be completely overhauled soon...the buses could have a new look as well.
