Detroit River and area Restoration - Canadian side

The Government of Canada is busy announcing its Great Lakes related restoration projects this week.

A couple of those are near Detroit, many others are in or near Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair.

The Detroit River one I have itemized below.

Project: Detroit River Water Quality and Habitat Restoration Program

Proponent: Essex Region Conservation Authority

Great Lakes Protection Initiative funding: $419,861 over 2 years

Project description: This project will improve fish and wildlife habitat by re-establishing a historic inlet for fish spawning on Peche Island and restoring a 30 hectare diked wetland as well as upland terrestrial habitat, part of the Detroit River Area of Concern remediation effort.

An impressive number of projects targeting the restoration of the St. Clair River and Lake Erie! Great News and kudos to Canada for leading the way!

John Hartig's book, Waterfront Porch: Reclaiming Detroit's Industrial Watefront as a Gathering Place for All, provides a very optimistic view about the ecological improvements in the Detroit River area including the return of beavers. The French settlers pretty much eliminated the beaver population from the Detroit rivers by selling their pelts in Paris but a few colonies of beaver have returned in recent years.

Bald Eagles are also making a notable comeback. I see occurrence reports along the Canadian side from Windsor down with some regularity.
That's extensively along the Detroit River as well as the Erie north shore.
