Interesting...Gilbert/Bedrock seems to have their hands full with so many large projects though. Maybe Gilbert wants to see a 1,000 room hotel in that spot?

A hotel/residential combo would be a nice addition there. Added 400-500 hotel rooms right at COBO's footstep, a few hundred residences as well. Although I didn't see in the article if the parking structure and lot next to the Joe were up for grabs as well.

The *IN* thing these days is for cities to get ~2,000 rooms or so hotels connected to their convention centers.

Nashville has one, OKC's getting one, Atlanta's getting one and Indianapolis has several.

A hotel on the JLA site would be a huge fail even with the proximity to the convention center. It seems unlikely that convention business alone could provide the necessary room-nights to make a profit and why would non-convention visitors choose such an isolated property. A Riverfront Towers-like residential project seems like the only option that would make sense.

The city is well aware of how disconnected the site is, and it would remain to be seen what the site program should be.

The city wants to demolish several structures as part of the plan:
- The ramp for Exit 1A from the John C. Lodge Freeway that leads to the arena parking garage and Jefferson Avenue.


- The Cobo Center circular parking ramp on Congress between Second and Third avenues. The area would then be used for a possible Cobo expansion.


- The pedestrian tubes that link Cobo to the arena parking garage, and a walkway that links the garage to the arena.


The study proposes a bridge for pedestrians and bicycles over the Lodge to connect with Third Avenue. That's the street on the western edge of the arena that's now cut in two by the freeway. The street leads to the DTE Energy campus headquarters and MGM Grand Detroit casino.

I still think it would make more sense to build a moving walkway/escalator over or through Cobo that would have pedestrians exit either in the Cobo lobby or sidewalk out front. It would be a lot less expensive than all of the other proposed changes, would link the hotel with the conv. center, which is the whole purpose of it, and pedestrians would be walking along Jefferson to Woodward or north on Washington, both superior to making their way north over the lodge.

Do all of the above. I think the west riverfront is going to take off between this site and some of the other parcels in the vicinity. Have paths that lead through Cobo and those that cross over the Lodge. Give people as much access as possible to downtown from that area.

Since it looks like they may scrap the ramp that leads to the roof I think they should make the whole damn thing a green roof or park. I used to think it would also be a cool spot for a Top Golf or something similar that could green things up and allow people to take advantage of the views.

Unless the streets in that area and the confusing and ugly spaghetti bowl of ramps and bridges is cleaned up, the only thing that would make sense on the JLA site is a Cobo addition or a garage directly connected to Cobo. That area's a mess and very unattractive to pedestrians or anyone looking to do more than drive through.
