Default Grosse Pointe Park reaches pact with Detroit to remove border barrier

For six years, Grosse Pointe Park found different ways to block a major intersection at the border of Detroit.

First it was a large pile of snow. Then a “delayed” water main project. Then a shed. And finally a farmer’s market with giant potted plants.

Now, the two communities have reached a tentative deal to reopen Kercheval to two-way traffic by the end of the month, The Detroit News first reported.

Under the deal, both sides of the intersection would be developed with shops, offices, apartments, and streetscapes.

Many Detroit and Grosse Pointe residents have criticized the blockade as an ugly symbol of intolerance and classism in a suburban community that banned African-Americans and Asians from owning property until about 60 years ago.

Good. This was an unnecessary blight and an obvious and ugly symbol.

I see that the Cotton family, who were the driving force behind this blight, have come around from their former plan to wholly block the street with an office building and now plan to erect a new building on the north side of Kercheval between Alter and Wayburn. Better.

Finally an urban peace offering for two cities.

^^^ It was a bit odd as I work in that area.

You just drove around the half-round-about to go in, then thru the side alley to leave or down one of the other streets to cut over to Kerch.

Some streets in Detroit [[such as South Woodward off Livernois) have these cuts offs too.

So it has not just been a Pointes thing.

Another B/S left wing article. First, there is no "blockade". Blockade denotes that there is no access to Kercheval and Grosse Point. Far from the truth. There are multiple ways to get to that intersection, including taking Kercheval in from Detroit. You just have to stop @ the stop sign before proceeding. I know, because I use Kercheval when I go into GP. Second, Kercheval and Wayburn is not a "major intersection". Wayburn is a small, populated residential street. Third, the addition of past racial practices to this article has little to do with that intersection being closed. The section of Kercheval, East of Wayburn, has bars, shops, and restaurants, now with outside dining areas, that on any given night has people sitting outside, enjoying themselves. People jog, walk their dogs, stop and grab libation, talk, etc., a very pleasant environment. The irony of this article, is the very people picking up torches and pitchforks against this contrived racist barrier, have no problem, in fact, condone, narrowing Woodward to the point of inaccessibility, and closing off Woodward and Warren, a major Detroit artery. It's too bad the COD has nothing else to do in their own backyard, then worry about what is going on in someone else's.

Yeah, I am over there alot. Not the biggest deal in the world once they took down those dumb barns and gozilla large flower pots. That for sure was some hideous mess.

WHAT!? It was already a bad/ busy intersection but what is this? Well maybe they'll just put a round-a-bout there like they have so many in Oakland county. Then it will be knowns as fist-fight and Warren...

No wait, they will try both of those options then go back opening it up with street lights. Like how they are removing the silly medians on Livernois!

There was nothing B/S about the M/T article. It stated the facts. The various blockades culminating with the kinda/sorta traffic circle have been a huge urban planning fail. A complete waste of time and resources. No measurable benefit has resulted. The GPP commercial district on Kercheval was doing fine before the blockade and is doing fine now. The only thing the "circle" definitely accomplished was nailing the coffin shut on any potential development spillover to the Detroit side of the border. Thankfully it appears that many of the "build the wall" old guard fools who supported the misguided effort have exited GPP government.

Their "facts" take a lot of editorial liberties to sway opinion.
