    Default Is Detroit's population growing?

Rents have risen in Detroit in the last five years. Has the population?

Don't tell me people outside Detroit have stopped being lazy and have taken a realistic and fresh [[accurate) view of the city?

If so, maybe that would bring new residents whose desire to live in 'The D' would raise rent prices, due to demand.

Overall, I have in fact seen prices rising, but I don't know what the overall population level is doing.

That is a spectacularly interesting question, and at the moment unanswerable. The U.S. Census Bureau produces estimates of population between the decennial counts, but they are just that, estimates, so until they do the next true count it will not really be possible to determine. And, even with that, the "citizenship question" is going to make the count inaccurate so it still may not actually be possible to know.

Funny. The Citizenship question was on the census returns up until 1950. Why didn't the population revolt back then? Just sayin'.

Are parts of the city experiencing population growth? Possibly.

Is the city as a whole experiencing population growth? I highly doubt it.

    Hey Ray... hope you're well...

To answer your question... in 1950 [[under president Truman) we didn't have an "immigration lightning rod" president.

^ that’s what you are calling Truman correct? Because he failed to address the commies in China in 1949 he brought us wars in North Korea and Vietnam and a gift that never ends, you whine about the current president but at least he has not caused the death of millions, that is the difference between acting and failing to act.

Not to even go down the road with Hoover.Under his watch you would already be in prison and your life ruined.

There was no Internet to stir folks up,or planes flying into buildings or wakos strapping bombs to kids.

But there was immigration enforcement so people knew it was handled and most immigrants wanted to be a part of America and the dream and took it seriously.

There also was not 400,000 pouring across the border because they were allowed to,so it was proably not so much an issue.

Michigan has had Mexican immigrants picking crops for a LONG time.
People forget we are in the top 5 agricultural states - freshwater rocks.

Michigan has more than 52,000 farmers
    sustaining its agricultural economy
    — but without immigrant labor, that could decline.
Total employment resulting from this sector is 923,000
which accounts for about 22 percent of the state’s employment.

We begged them to come..............."they" gave us cheap food

Well this sent me down a hole. The Census Bureau has images of the historical questionnaires for every census. It looks like each decade asked about things that were important at the time. The 1960 census was interested in what type of fuel you used for heating, and whether you had a TV.

Detroit has one of the lowest foreign born populations of any large city in the USA. Not even the Chinese want to establish themselves there. Mexicans are fleeing to Lincoln Park rather than stay in the city.... that's your sign things aren't so hot...

There is a major misunderstanding. The citizenship question the administration wishes to add to Census 2020 has never been asked in a
census before. It is misleading to contend that it has been asked previously.

In 1950, persons who were born abroad were asked about their citizenship. That is different from asking everyone about their citizenship.
How you ask questions make a great deal of difference in how people reply.

Not entirely true, Dan. Like anyone else, it depends on their status and outlook in life. Some do move to the 'burbs, but there is a large number of them settling in Southwest Detroit. Same with the Arabs, Chaldeans, Polish, and other immigrants. Some want McMansions, and can afford them, some don't.

Pontiac has a large Mexican population, as well. So, not entirely true.

-There is no evidence, as of yet, that the Mexican population in Detroit is dropping; there may be an increase in Detroit's Mexican population and a [[larger) increase in Downriver's Mexican population. We will see in the next Census.

-A month ago, I was walking to a math teacher who works at Western High School, and he stated over the past few months, the school has been receiving immigrants from Central America. At the pace of 1 student every few weeks.

-The Middle Eastern population is continuing to expand in Southwest Detroit and Warrendale where it borders Dearborn and Dearborn Heights.

-There have been several article over the past few years about the Bangladesh community in Detroit just north of the Hamtramck border.

-You are very negative all the time.

Detroit has been on extended life support for over 50 years. Sure, Dan Gilbert has given the city a slight pulse in the center. Yet, there are no signs of any meaningful growth. The Detroit Public Schools are not inundated with thousands of new students. No signal for a need to expand and build additional schools to accommodate new students to the district. Mexican town in South West Detroit is a ghost of what it was. Warrendale has had zero new construction of single family homes in the last 20 years. Detroit continues to tear down 8,000 abandoned houses a year, yet new construction fails to generate any type of population increase. We could discuss population density or the lack thereof in the city.... Either way you look at it, Detroit simply is tearing down more than it builds...

You don't know what you're talking about as usual, Latin communities in Detroit are healthy and growing.

Total B/S, Dan. Southwest Detroit is growing like crazy. Kids are moving in and buying up and fixing up homes. Homes are selling for 2-3 times what they were selling for just 5 years ago. My old favorite restaurants are full of young people these days. It's good to see.
