Default Utile envisions a grand, new future for Detroit’s Eastern Market

    source
an important effort lead by the city in reinforcing a vital piece of the city

The project has two separate but related focus areas: the historic core of the market, centered on the market sheds, and an area targeted for the expansion of food industry businesses to the north and east of the existing market district. The expansion of the market is necessitated by new federal food regulations triggered by the 2011 Food Safety Modernization Act and the desire by the City of Detroit to retain and expand the job opportunities provided by the food industry.

Fingers crossed that it comes to fruition. However, it seems like most announced projects lately are somewhat fUtile. [[Sorry, couldn't resist.)

I remember someone posting a mock rendering of Russell near the Fisher Fwy service being lined with stores such as Panera Bread, Baskin Robbins, etc in place of the Russell Street Deli, Zeffs, and Supinos. Maybe the new retail should line Gratiot in place of Busy Bee Hardware. These developements were a long time coming. The very sad thing is most of these restaurant's owners did not owned the buildings that they operated in. That was the problem with Henry the Hatter. He didnt own the building that his shop was in.
