Not only more taxes and more welfare,.. but also more unemployment, more racial division, more crime.

    Good times are coming again.

After reading the article at brizee's link, I can't help wondering why we don't proactively preempt problems like gerrymandering instead of retroactively correcting them. Maybe that sounds naïve but it sure would be more efficient.

Do European countries have this gerrymandering problem?

Proving once again that the only way Republicans can win is by lying, cheating and stealing.

Now, now, the folks in the GOP are kind, caring and honest Christians. Why their "Screw you I got mine! Party politics come first regardless of the will of the people!" are reflective of their true DNA.

If non-citizens are not counted in the 2020 census and only Americans are represented in the U.S. Congress, Michigan will pick up one congressional seat. This change, by itself, would require new congressional district lines.

The party in power at the time of the census tries to ensure they'll be elected for the next ten years. Their incentive is to gerrymander even further, not to play fair. It will be interesting to see what the independent panel comes up with in 2020.

I've laid out my plan for districts before. Some like it, some didn't.

Basic concept, NO party involvement in the mapping. None. Must be done by an independent commission. NO demographics either. Head count only.

More importantly,.. the only way Democrats can win is by promising to steal money from a small group, and give it to a bigger group,... in order to buy themselves votes.

Sure they'll destroy the state / country they're running for office in [[I.E. Treason),.. but what do THEY care,... they get to wield power for a few years.

And if the middle class get wiped out, and the poor get even more poor, and dead, ... well, that's THEIR problem. The politician will be well off, and living in a gated community.

Michigan has a Democrat Governor,Detroit has a Democrat mayor, historic gerrymandering proportions are leaning towards what party?

I guess it does not work so well.

The only historical cycle is Dems get in office, create more ways to tax to the point where everybody is broke then republicans take office and rebuild so people can breathe again, then the cycle repeats again.

When it does not we see cities staying broke, although Detroit’s current mayor seems to be an exception, but then again he could really be a Republican that identifies as a Democrat.

Geography alone works against the Democrats. The liberals are heavily concentrated in a few urban areas, and thus the geographic spread is not a heterogeneous statewide representation of the overall population mix.

Long story short, you will probably always get a greater representation of the GOP in district type legislature voting, when compared to the political breakdown of the state population as a whole. This will remain true regardless who draws the lines, albeit not quite as skewered as the current Gerrymandering.

Michigan will lose one seat in Congress after Census 2020 unless there
is some totally unexpected demographic change. Current law calls
for the distribution of Congressional seats on the basis of what is
identified by Congress as the apportionment population. Congressional seats and the electoral college could be apportioned on the count of citizens age 18 and over but this would, seemingly, require both constitutional amendment and numerous changes in federal law.

We will know more when Census 2020 counts for states are released on the morning of Thursday morning December 31, 2020.

One of Michigan's most gerrymandered districts is that of Rashida Tlaib. Perhaps in the mayhem of redrawing lines and possibly adding an additional congressional district Democracts can squeeze out Rep. Tlaib in a primary for someone more amenable to Jewish lobbies and moderates. This has happened before. When Ohio had to give up one congressional district, Kucinich's district [[Cleveland) was combined with Marcy Kaptur's distict [[Toledo). Both Representatives had been enemies of the Federal Reserve. Either way, mega banks would win. Kaptur won and was tamed. She hasn't been a major critic of the Fed since.

Michigan Democrats will also have to decide whether to support California having an extra four representatives based on counting non-citizens or having one additional Michigan representative to represent Michigan if non-citizens are not counted in the 2020 census.

Yes, like when George W. Bush saved us from the Clinton surplus and Pax Americana by hurling us into two endless wars, the Great Recession, and a mushrooming deficit.

Other than the occasional billionaire, it's great how it's been laid so bare that Balkan-style hyper-nationalism or virulent fundamentalist Christianity are the true motivators for the vast majority of GOP voters.

I'm white, a Christian, a veteran, and a proud American - and I will never, ever, ever vote GOP. Trump, Dubya, Snyder - enough said.

You have that backwards. The housing crash and resulting depression [[oops,.. I mean "Great Recession") was the result of Clinton,.. not Bush.

The socialist system of mortgage guarantees we've had [[FHA etc) was working quite well until [[under the Clinton admin) they removed most all of the regulations on it. This was under the auspices of making it easier for minorities to buy homes.

So with no income qual, etc, mortgages exploded. This puts a massive amount of artificial currency into the system. Building exploded, house prices exploded,.. but it was all a bubble.

It was unsustainable, and it finally collapsed a decade after it began,.. but by that time Clinton was out of office, and the next guy takes the heat.

But blaming that one thing on Bush is dishonest.

Think of it as Clinton receiving 100,000 new credit cards,.. maxing them out [[life is good, for a while). Yay the budget is balanced, the economy is great. But then the bills coming due under Bush, and the downside is bigger and lasts longer than the bubble did.

The fools won't figure that out,.. and will think Clinton was a great president,.. and we need more like him. But the housing disaster, NAFTA, etc were all catastrophic to our economy.

Are you serious? Cut the nation to the bone, for the profit of a few?

We've already seen it, to shut down the government, for the fancy of
    ONE person!

I've always been non-partisan, but the state and national Repubs and their backers have ruined their stance for the past forty years.

And Democrats have a tendency to over reach, after years of a lockstep
congressional plan to back the "Crazy" guy in the oval office.

That is what has trickled down to me over the years.

I've heard that. Thus, why they want to push voting for incarcerated felons. Only problem [[smile) is that some long-term inmates have had enough time to think and read to have turned indie or conservative!! ----

There's a percentage of religion conversion going on in prison, newly converted Muslims and Christians may not be so obliged towards the new socialist democratic agenda or what the repubs keep churning!

Outside of the being white part which really should not matter, that outlook or stance is what makes this country great.

You have that freedom to take that stance even though there are some who wish to remove those very freedoms.

I did military service under then president Carter,he stripped the military down to the bone and pushed the anti military agenda to the point where it was best not to be in public in uniform.

The lack of spare parts cost a lot of lives on failed missions,we had 9 months of straight 24-7 duty in Iran no breaks,he pops up gives us a warm beer and says great job expect a $300 bonus, which never came and did not even offer to help load the bodies.

$10,000 in life insurance was the only benefit offered.

Even at that you never saw rusty navel vessels floating around and running into other ships,or terrorist boats blowing them up and you would have never handed your weapon over to the enemy out of political correctness like the military was run under the previous administration.

If we did not have the constant bickering it would meen the checks and balances no longer worked and we would have bigger problems then gerrymandering to worry about.

Defend your work, professor. I'd like to see a citation for that.

Even if that were accurate, Bush had 8 years to undo or modify whatever Clinton did but was too busy getting us mired in unwinnable wars.

Not a Clinton fan but definitely not a fan of this Fox News-style of rewriting history to favor whoever has an R after their name.

Are you aware of time lines?

^ I am well aware of timelines and do not need to subscribe to any links, typical response you had there from the Democratic playbook.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Eagle_Claw

How could Carter have ordered it if he was not president in your response.

The navy has and is involved in many different aspects and missions,it is not just about ships.

Carter cared about the armed forces about as much as Obama and Hillary did, politics first the people second.Seems to be a common trait.

It seems like everytime the military is being hung out to dry there is a Democrat behind it looking to further thier political agenda at the cost of others.
