Default FCA to invest $4.5B in 5 Michigan plants, create 6,500 jobs [[5,000 in Detroit)

"The company said Tuesday it plans to invest $1.6 billion to convert the two plants that comprise the Mack Avenue Engine Complex on the city's east side — including long-idled Mack II — into an assembly plant to build the next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee as well as new three-row and plug-in hybrid versions of the highly profitable SUV."

Five thousand new jobs at the East Jefferson FIAT site means at least a
two percent in employment in the city. This is a favorable development.

And they will be drug testing so get ready folks who so engage.

Concentra drug testing place right down de' road at Jefferson and Chene.

Maybe some of the laid-off GM workers can apply were applicable.

ZERO factual reporting for the exact tax incentives
on a Federal, State or City level in respect to any of the operations.

Residents in Sterling Heights and Warren definitely will not
be seeing their property tax bill diminish due to the NEW operations.

Quite true there Sammy - all that industry around and taxes get
pushed upon the seniors who own their homes - and have fixed incomes.
Work hard to pay everything off , make a nice home, and then WHAM !!!

Don't forget all those laid off, still have to pay those property taxes too

Doesn’t the Headlee Amendment limit property tax increases.
BTW, I have a couple of friends living in Corktown who recently saw a 30% increase on their taxes.

I'm sure they have their reasons like synergy/logistics with the Jefferson plant and I don't understand construction but it sure would have been nice if Chrysler could have bought and retrofitted the Poletown plant rather than building new.

Did the properties recently change ownership? Property taxes can only go up by inflation, Unless ownership on the property has changed. Changing ownership Leads to the notorious popup tax.

The only other thing that I can think that can make property taxes jump is an NEZ tax abatement expiring.

They have owned the properties for > 2 years and no NEZ was ever applied. They are fighting it.

Industry needs to pay TAXES to aid the community they work within.
Continually string together tax breaks over 5 or 6 decades isn't cool.
"""Well if we don't get it we'll move"""" - it's business - always has been.
Look around the USA and see how Corporations screwed over cities.
Loyalty stretches as far as the paper money, then it tears, gig is up.

USA corporations only paid $205 billion.in taxes 2018.
Down $ 90 billion from last year 2017.

The tax reform law dropped the corporate income tax rate
from 35 % to 21 % so yeah, they are paying less into the system.

Michigan is sooooo twisted and upside down - economically.

$6 billion in refundable tax credits Michigan owes 50 companies
over the next decade is an unfunded liability

If no one is paying taxes - how do services, infrastructure, and government continue to function in the state ?

Default Neighborhood blowback Over Chrysler plans

Shades of Amazon in NYC as neighborhood residents voice concerns and dissent about FCA project from today's Free Press...

"At least 400 people jammed the union hall Wednesday evening for the first public meeting required by the ordinance. There were so many that a lot were turned away and a followup meeting scheduled the next evening, with other meetings scheduled in the weeks ahead.

"The sometimes raucous meeting Wednesday highlighted anew the perennial question of who gets to decide the fate of major development deals. Not just neighbors but numerous academics and urban affairs specialists have for years complained that big projects are negotiated behind closed doors and sprung on the public only when it's too late to stop or amend in any meaningful way.

"It didn't help when officials told the audience that more than half the new jobs, or about 2,700, would go to existing temporary workers at Chrysler, not all new hires. Chrysler and UAW officials were quick to say that many of those temps live in the city, and Chrysler promised to open a recruitment office in the immediate neighborhood. And they noted that there will be multiple spin-off jobs for each plant worker.

It's business , for profit , first and foremost, everyday .
A strategic calculated decision for FCA , not necessarily to help Detroit

So Moroun gives up his 80 acres for 117 acres plus 43.5 million in return? Nice deal.

i’d say that about 10 times out of 10 in deals such as this, the promised jobs actually fall far short or they are using smoke and mirrors to make excessive claims. If one believes FCA’s Rosie Scenario, you might also believe a thriving District Detroit is imminent.

So the The City of Detroit gets a NICE BIG FAT yearly TAX Check
    - so the City can advance Infrastructure, Services, Quality in Life ???

OR does it have to wait 20 years for those Tax Checks only to defer them
for yet another 20 years, in effect getting little out of the entire deal ?
