Default Smooth Jazz in the D

Not sure if this is the place but don't see how it could hurt: Recently I've started programming a small smooth jazz station on the Internet for the Detroit area that was an HD side channel of 107.5 several years ago. It has a fresher, deeper playlist and includes a few local artists but I need listeners to keep it on the air. No need to donate anything; just listen and spread the word. I've worked so hard to build this and would like to see it become a long-lasting hit. If you have any suggestions for airplay especially if you're a local artist wanting recognition, please e-mail me with your MP3 files at bdj00@msn.com. Thanks in advance, and enjoy!

First suggestion? Cut the 'in the D' gang banger slang crap. 'In Detroit' is fine.

Might as well tell the Tigers to tear the "D" off of their uniforms too while you're at it. I always thought that had a ghetto stance to it, don't you think?

I don't have any interest in sports in any way, so I don't care what pay for play operations do. But if you can't see the difference between a simple single letter logo/monogram and a gang banger slang slogan, well ....

I can't say for sure, but I don't believe WJZZ would have reduced themselves to such nonsense.

Congratulations and best wishes with your endeavor. It plays easily and quickly.

Giving it a good listen right now as I do some chores around the house. Audio quality is good, smooth streaming. Great picks. Good stuff!

Now, if someone would please revive the old "Mix 92.3 - Detroit's Smooth R&B" programming, winding down after those shitty winter days would be easier.

Methinks you just caught yourself with pants down, with a big "D" sticking out there; Meddle. You talk about context, but really, what does gangbanger have to do with an inoffensive call letter? Really? Unless you decide to add a mock pornographic intent like I did.

You are way too uptight on this. Relask already.

Thank you for sharing this. I'm not big into smooth jazz but definitely into listening to new music and supporting local artists. Will be sure to keep it in mind - listening right now.

You know what I found that I think never gets old? It doesn't cost anything to be kind. Not a cent.

The station is officially named 104.7 The Oasis.

Not a fan of "in the D" either, especially for this format, but whatever brands it "Detroit is ok by me. I love this format and blame Cheap Channel [[now iFart Media) and more specifically Alan Kepler for ruining the format. Best of luck and I will give it a listen. Detroit SO needs a smooth jazz station. Lots of markets do. Just not the way Broadcast Architecture did it.

If I could make one suggestion: get rid of the pop vocals. That's what killed the format before [[thanks to the aforementioned Mr. Kepler). There are plenty of other R&B/SJ vocals that you could play. Meeting listener expectations = success. If they expect SJ, they don't expect Bruce Hornsby.

As I've already stated, it is officially called 104.7 The Oasis. And the playlist has been substantially improved. Thanks for the support. Means a lot!

Station is doing well and audience is slowly growing. Playlist continues to be improved by leaps and bounds. Thanks so much, everyone. Let's keep it going! New music added recently from native Detroiters Motown Moe and Deon Yates.

This is a good thing. It was disappointing to a lot of people when WJZZ shut down in 1996.

Eli Zaret, WJZZ-FM, 1975-78 disc jockey and sports broadcaster. I remember listening to him when I was going to UM Dearborn in the 1970’s

IIRC the meme was invented in the marketing department of some local network TV station, which is sufficient reason to never repeat it IMHO.

No self-respecting gang-banger would ever say 'in the D' [not that there are any self-respecting gang-bangers.]

To say I was disappointed when I returned to Detroit in 1998 and discovered WJZZ was no more is an understatement.

I was driving home from night classes at Wayne State in 1996, and when I tuned to 105.9 FM I heard rap music instead of jazz. I thought something was wrong with my radio.

We can get a lot of radio from elsewhere on the internet. If you want it live the WRTI jazz channel is my favorite 24/7. Over the air there's Ed Love on WDET, and sometimes there's 91.7 [Ann Arbor] and 90.5 [E. Lansing] if you can get them.

You might like Jazz24 out of Seattle.
