Default Photos That Capture Everyday Life of Detroit in the 1970s

Some nice pictures in the below link from one of my favorite eras in Detroit.

A place post-riot that still felt like a big, vibrant, diverse city, even if gritty, but also proceeds the free fall that occurred during the late 1970s/early 1980s recession and crack-cocaine epidemic.

Many of the photos look 1950s style, rather than 70s.

On a separate but similar topic, can anyone tell me about the early 80s crack-cocaine epidemic in Detroit - its effects and influence? Obviously it also happened in New York and other major cities, but what was the effect on the city and the neighborhoods in the Detroit of the 80s?

Good post. Love those old nostalgic photos. I'll make an effort to view them on a real computer screen and not this stupid phone.

It's not Detroit, but for me, the opening scenes of Dog Day Afternoon capture the vibe of city life in the 1970s.

I was about to say that Dog Day WAS partially filmed in Detroit, but that was Serpico filmed at Scott Fountain, wasn't it?
Edit: Wrong again; it was Scarecrow

I love 70's pics of big cities, especially grit pics. Would have loved to be around back then. Thanks for these!

The photographer in your link is Dave Jordano. He is based in Chicago but hails from Detroit. It would appear he comes back to The D to capture more images of the city from time to time, such as stuff like this:

Detroit is a strangely fascinating [[and photogenic) place.

Thanx for the post, NT. Finally got a chance to study it. A lot of memories in there that are gone now with the resurgence of the "new" Detroit. In a way, the old Detroit was a better place.
