Default Michigan Central Depot - 105 Years Ago Today

Prior to their famous depot in Roosevelt Park, the Michigan Central railroad used a depot at 3rd and West Jefferson. On December 26, 1913, that station burned to the ground. The
railroad had plans to open their new depot early in 1914. Given the importance of rail transportation, the railroad was, I have
read, able to begin running service into and out of the Michigan Central depot we know so well on the afternoon of December 26, 1913. I am glad the depot has a new lease on life.

Actually, the old depot did not burn to the ground. The tower was destroyed as was much of the building, but a large portion of the building did survive the fire and was used for other purposes for quite some time after the fire.

The old MC station was demolished in June 1966, according to Historic Detroit. Much of the former station sat where Riverfront Towers are now.
