I think they need to cut both their wages and staff expenses by 25%
    79,650/salary + 1000/monthly =

    80,650 x 148 = 11,936,200

    cut by 25% - 60,488 X 148 = $8,952,224 – savings of $3,000,000

    can't find figures on staff

This has been done piecemeal from various outlets throughout Michigan.

Local elected officials are asked about what they are giving up during this year's budget debacle. They either don't answer, or slither away embarassed or insulted that such a question was asked of them.

The reps. from Detroit really looked greedy considering many other reps. outside of Detroit voluntarily took the cut.

[[Should have been kept in Discuss Detroit, IMHO.)

I don't know why it was moved either.

It definitely had a local connection.

no one took a cut, some, INCLUDING some from the D, ARE giving back

good for all the dems and reps who gave back. it still ain't cutting their wage, but it is a start.

btw -- most of them aren't even giving the $1000 monthly they get for per diem expenses back

Why do we need a bicameral legislature? Why not reduce the number of representatives and staffs by switching to a one house, part time body?
Maybe several dozen districts with local elections would suffice.
    State payrolls would be reduced.
    Any comments?

Politicians [[more Dems than Rep) cut their salaries? Jeffersonian style politics? Don't hold your breath.

The ruling class will never cut their own salaries, despite what the supposed "conservative" politicians tell their constituents.

Bicameral legislatures are a necessary evil because they are a check in the legislative process.

It prevents, or at least seriously delays, power from being accumulated too quickly & easily.

Ohio does something interesting with their legislative staff. They don't have staffers assigned to individual legislators. They are assigned to the committees and sub-committees. They can assist individual legislators if needed.

Yes, this means that people who get a $79,000/yr paycheck and $12,000/year per diem will need to actually work for their paycheck, instead of just going around and spending other people's money.
