Default Presidents who lived in metropolitan Detroit

The death of former president George Herbert Walker Bush reminds me that, so far as I know, only two presidents lived in or near Detroit. George Bush apparently resided in Trenton for several months in the spring of 1945 when he was assigned to the Naval Air Station on Grosse Ile. I do not know where he
lived in Trenton. President Grant lived in Detroit was assigned as an office at Fort Wayne.

Grant's house still stands, although now in very rough shape. The house was built in 1837 and Grant lived there for a little more than a year, from April 1849 to May 1850. It was moved from its original location at 253 [[changed to 1369) E. Fort St., between Rivard and Russell [[where the Navarre Place townhouses stand today, just southwest of 1300 Lafayette) to the State Fairgrounds back in the 1930s. It has sat neglected for many years now, but there are apparently plans afoot to move it again, perhaps to the Eastern Market area, and rehab it.

According to this story, the Bushes lived in Wyandotte and Dearborn:
    https://www.wxyz.com/news/george-hw-...it-during-wwii

From Barbara Bush's 1994 memoir, quoted in that story:
"We went to Grosse Ile Air Base in Michigan and lived in rooms in Wyandotte and Dearborn. ... We moved over to Dearborn and stayed with the dearest family, Joe and Grace Gorgone and their children. We have stayed in touch all these years, until Grace died in March 1993."

But according to other sources, the Gorgones actually lived in Trenton. The 1940 census shows them in Trenton at 138 Jefferson.

It is amazingly "metro Detroit" that the "Detroit Historical Society" has a "Kid Rock Music Lab" and virtually no one - notably them - cares about this house.

I thought kid rock donated a sizable chunk of change to the Historical Society when it was de-funded by the city during the bankruptcy.

Wannabees: Presidential candidates George Romney, Mitt Romney, and Ron Paul lived in Detroit. Mitt Romney was born in Detroit's Harper Hospital. The Romneys lived in a 5,000 sq.' home at 1860 Balmoral in Palmer Woods before moving to Bloomfield Hills. Mitt Romney will at least be a U.S. Senator born in Detroit. The house has since been burned down. Ron Paul did his medical internship at Henry Ford Hospital in 1961-1962. He may have lived in a westside suburb.

Detroit's Lewis Cass, after serving as ambassador to France, sought the
1844 Democratic party nomination but failed to get it. He did get their nomination four years later but, similar to Detroit's Mitt Romney, lost the election.
Tom Dewey, from Owosso, carried the banner for the Republicans in 1944 and 1948 but lost both times. His home is preserved in that city.

Worth noting that Romney's old house was torn down a few years ago because it was in such bad shape. Relatively rear to have a teardown in PW.

Yes, Paul Martin. Prime Minister from 2003-2006 was born in Windsor at Hotel-Dieu Grace and grew up split between there and Ottawa. His father was MP of the former Essex East riding, from 1935-1968. Martin, Sr. also practiced law in Windsor.

It seems that the Detroit Historical Society had no interest in it, nor Fort Wayne, and Greenfield Village turned it down outright. Both of the articles that I linked above though discuss a planned move of the house by the state's Michigan History Center to the Eastern Market area, perhaps to serve as a Dept. of Natural Resources education center. But both articles also say that the move was planned to happen this past summer, and as far as I know that did not occur, nor have I seen anything further about plans for this house.
