^ they have the perfect opportunity to re-open next to the Grinnell building. it would no doubt do well and make for a great promotion story. they should get on it.

One thing Detroit need is reliable mass transportation and the promotion of it. The residents alone living downtown may not be enough to support an Emagine Theatre or other retail but a good transportation system could bring many from miles around to shop and support a movie theatre or two. Also these parking structures downtown should have 2 hours free parking especially for those motorists who parking in the structures and shop downtown. Birmingham has 2 hours free parking and had been successful at it.The biggest complaint about shopping downtown is the expensive limited in time parking. Many successful retail districts in cities across this country have a reliable mass transportation system. Detroit will need to fall in line

Screw mass exodus trains. Just another one note samba pipe dream.

Take over the Ill Itches lots and make them all free parking. Encourage private vehicle ownership and use in the Motor City.

Restore the reversible center lane on Grand River to aid rush hour. Dump the Tinker Toy Train on Woodward and do the center lane bit there too. I can't remember if they had it on Gratiot or not.

Autonomous vehicles are the answer to all of Detroit’s problems. It solves the public transportation issue, frees up parking lots for development and cuts down congestion during events.
Detroit is perfectly poised for this revolution in people moving. Other cities known for and heavily invested in their public transportation will have the painful task of unwinding all that antiquated infrastructure. This is an opportunity that should not, and I suspect will not, be missed.

Are we being sarcastic with these ideas? This thread has lost the plot.

I certainly am not, are you? But if you think all the major OEM’s, Tesla, Google, Apple, a multitude of start ups and Tier 1’s like pissing their money, time and resources into fantasyland, then you’re free to do so. I personally am hedging that this technology will be mainstream over the next few years.

Yeah, it will be huge, but we're more likely 10-15 years from mainstream adoption, and even then vehicles may only be partially autonomous. Silicon Valley loves making utopian promises that it can't fulfill. Let's have a healthy skepticism.

And mainstream adoption doesn't mean overthrowing all other modes of transport. It might dominate in car-dominated cities like Detroit but will never replace rail transport in larger, higher-density cities such as New York or London where ubers already clog the streets night and day. Imagine millions of more cars on the streets every day and it stops making sense, in geometric terms alone.

Yeah these comments are completely off the rails. First of all, free parking doesn't allow people who are actually building good structures to justify the cost, and free surface lots just exacerbate our sea of parking. Autonomous vehicles will be no more affordable than cars today, and ride hailing will only increase congestion. Public transit needs to be understood as a necessity for a city our size.

    free scooters for everyone.

WiFi charging kiosks at beignet/shawarma/taco trucks.

Oh, and an elevated monorail that only stops at the cool spots. A subway so Joel Loving can do some good in the world. A working light on the Penobscot.

Mass transit doesn't have to be monorail or any type of train. It could be rapid busses with their own dedicated lanes a traffic signals. The increase of shuttles that can take suburbanites from the suburbs to the shopping entertainment districts of downtown, midtown, the avenue of fashion andgateway shopping center
