Default Path To Prison Reform Pending - ACLU Supports?

Trump Embraces a Path to Revise U.S. Sentencing and Prison Laws

    From article:

Mr. Trump’s support could give political cover to Republicans wary of reducing some hard-line sentencing rules for drug and other offenses, and enable the legislation’s sponsors to assemble a coalition of moderate Republicans and Democrats in time to move a bill before the year’s end — and before the new, divided Congress is seated.

The changes have attracted a broad and unusual range of supporters, including the billionaire brothers Charles G. and David H. Koch on the right and the American Civil Liberties Union on the left. Conservatives see an opportunity to begin to cut into the high costs of the nation’s growing prison population. Liberals have long opposed the current sentencing laws for what they see as having unfairly incarcerated a generation of young men, particularly African-American men, for drug and other nonviolent offenses.

Geez who does this guy think he is,trying to pass the most sweeping changes sense 1992,is he nuts?

He has always said the punishment should fit the crime, verses the minimum mandatory.

In true fashion the Dem city I live in has established a funded review board that is staffed with attorneys and if you have been convicted guilty, they will review the case.

Much like project freedom, but at all levels verses just reviewing life sentences, but if it helps others they can take the claim of they did it first, outside of what took them so long.

I live in a police state and the goal is to incarcerate as many as possible for whatever reason in order to feed the machine which is really not the object.

I wonder how many lives were destroyed going down the prison for profit route?

Too bad so many republicans oppose it. Senate majority leader McConnell is refusing to schedule a vote. A lot of republicans would be very unhappy if he did.

Was this a calculation by Trump he could win big points voicing his support for the bill, knowing it won't pass?

Next year democrats will hold the majority in the House, and you can be sure they'll want to renegotiate some aspects of the bill. The republican Senate will refuse to reconcile the differences and Trump and the rest of the GOP will use that as an excuse to blame democrats.

Trump gets to look good for something that won't likely happen, and then when it doesn't will use it as a hammer.

Trump’s endorsement of the bill comes days after he forced Jeff Sessions to resign as attorney general.

Sessions, a hard-line law and order conservative from Alabama, was vehemently opposed to any type of criminal justice reform.

Jared Kushner, on the other hand, is a big proponent of the bill and has spent several months working on it.

If you notice President Trump may have been backed by the Republican Party he is not exactly beholden to them, the object is to better the lives for all Americans, the political divide thrown in there is the endorsement of us verses them.

There is also stand-offing in the Democrat side of wanting to add more which will proably add to the stalling is understandable but with everything there has never been a complete ideal situation bill passed, more so a big ice block and slowly chipping way to get the intended results, eventually.

If the ACLU support this then the left will get behind it somewhat.

They had 8 years to deal with it and did nothing,I guess it takes a Republican or somebody that provides a bit more then lip service to show they care about thier fellow Americans.

The current president may be an ass to most but he seems to have a habit of getting things done.
