    Default Detroit's worst neighborhoods?

This is a topic that gets discussed on DYes from time to time. Although some of you will find it boring or repetitive, I think the topic is an interesting one to follow as the city progresses.

For me, anywhere within one mile of downtown, in any direction, is okay these days, even if some people criticize Greektown. What say you, in terms of crime and grime?

You're probably going to catch a lot of heat for this one! Six Mile to Seven Mile and Gratiot area from my experience living in the city until very recently. Very blighted, very high crime.

NE Detroit generally has the highest crime rates, so I would go with NE Detroit.

Remember that you need people to have crime. Bombed out ghettohoods don't have crazy high crime because they don't have people. 7 Mile-Gratiot is still mostly intact, so more dangerous.

IMO, Seven mile can be bad from the rooter to the tooter [[east side to west thru to Livonia)! One of my cousins had shots fired into her car as she drove down West Seven a few years back. Thankfully no one was hurt.

I go up to Eight mile and cut back over to Seven when I get new a street or business off or on Seven mile road. Too folks driving like maniacs too!

So that we're not just picking on the 7 Mile / Gratiot [[east side), I would also add Warrendale [[Southfield & Joy) as well as Dexter / Davison.

My sister told me one of our old neighbors visited our neighborhood [[West of Hoover, South of State Fair) and needed a police escort out of the area.
Yeah Detroit's reviving. Just like it did 30+ years ago when I left. smh.

Yes, the upper east side is bad, especially around Morang, Kelly, Gratiot. I see the central West side as worse due to the higher population.

Interestingly I found that by the time I left a couple years ago the spillover from downtown was spreading into other neighborhoods that had managed to hang on [[University District, Green Acres, East English Village) and those areas actually improved. The challenge is that the unbranded, anyplace neighborhoods in Detroit are now largely more empty and/or dangerous than ever. The trouble is that even in Detroit's perceived "low points" areas like Kelly/Morang and Warrendale were actually in better shape! I think Detroit is indeed better off than ten-twenty years ago but there are definitely steps back with each step forward.

The fringe neighborhoods [[like Warrendale or Kelly/Morang) were much better 20 years ago.

Speaking very generally, everything within Grand Blvd is somewhat better, and everywhere else, esp. close to city limits, is somewhat worse.

Same with the fringe suburbs, save Ferndale and maybe a few others.

City-adjacent suburbs close to Woodward have generally improved, but the rest have generally declined. Southern Macomb and older Wayne communities [[Wayne, Westland, Redford and the like) are obvious examples.

Had a gun [[actually 2) to my head 15 years ago at an after hours club near 6 mile and Woodward. That would be my pick for worst neighborhood in Detroit

Charmers around the Houston -Whittier area up to 7 Mile. The lower East side West of Conner and South of Warren.

Also the area just below I-96 around Lasher is terrible.

That is just the tip of the iceberg.

Yes, Six Mile and Seven Mile would be obvious choices, but there are others. It can change rapidly. Corktown is good, but nearby Mexican Village seems a bit seedy to me. Brightmoor probably hasn't improved in years. It will be interesting to see if Fernando Palazuelo's plans for the Packard improve that Grand Boulevard area, albeit slowly.

So the ""Filter Down" effect of Big Money projects in Detroit
might actually take 20 or 30 years to overhaul these neighborhoods ?

I live on Chalmers, but I know that doesn't matter, so let's go from a different view. If I go by the view from my suburban household and ride through the City there are areas as mentioned that are violent and bombed out. So can see why you would get the veiw point that these areas would take 20 to 30 years to see any type of improvment. I felt the same way lets say 5 years ago. After living in both worlds I would say that violent crimes happen in individual households more than the whole neighborhood. I haven't seen or experienced any in my neighborhood, but I would urge people to understand the City as far as violence is concerned is concentrated to households more so than in general.

There's a drive-in McDonald's store at the corner of 7 Mile and Gratiot. Is that the McDonald's store nicknamed 'The MurdaMac'?

I mean no disrespect but if you are at an after hours club, you’re asking for trouble anyway. I would stick to regular bars, then after 2:00 am when they close I would go home.

In any case, 6 Mile and Woodward is not the worst neighborhood in Detroit. Which doesn't mean you can't have a gun put to your head in the middle of the night.

Yeh, we were looking for trouble and found it at 4am but I swear, they were only serving orange juice

Been nearly 30 years, so I had to go look and get reoriented, but Lahser [[not Lasher) doesn't really go south of 96. It's Outer Drive at that point turning back to Lahser for only a block or so before it disappears into trees.

I don't remember that area as being particularly bad though. I remember it as one of those more decent enclaves sort of separated from Brightmoor by 96, Outer Drive and the factories to the south and east.

But I also don't remember what that High School now shown as 'Detroit Community High School' used to be called.

OK, so apparently it wasn't a school in my time which is why I don't remember it:

"The needs of the growing school quickly exceeded the capacity of the leased facility. In 2005 the Board of Directors secured financing for the purchase and renovation of a 120,000 square foot former industrial facility, located on nine acres, on Burt Road in Detroit. "
