Default Feds To Consolidate Workforce In Detroit

Where are the 1,100 employees to move there coming from [[presumably elsewhere in leased space around town)?

This is another move which will increase employment along Michigan Ave. on the western edge of downtown.

I really wonder if we'll see more demand for housing in that area.

There was a story about the Leland House to be renovated. It is what a 4 block walk from this building.

Also new constructions a few blocks away. Correct? Has that started?

Will some of the blend in what will happen along Michigan Ave. in Corktown? Someone [[millenial?) can live at the Leland House, work at that Federal building and eat at Slows...

Perhaps the leasing situation wasn't financially sustainable

The federal government has been trying to consolidate operations for decades.

The department where I worked [[a cabinet department headquarters) was consolidating its employees when I retired. Before that it was ridiculous the number of locations headquarter employees worked.

Every time the department grew, they went out and leased more office space.

The only problem with more federal hiring is that it isn't usually a good thing. Let me explain:

The big increase in federal hiring [[and budget busting) this century have had to do with terrorism [[9/11) and wars [[Afghanistan and Iraq).

The one most folks forget is VA. After about 25 years of peace time [[1976 - 2001, except Persian Gulf), the dual wars in Afghanastan and Iraq produced a lot of veterans, many with very, very serious injuries [[e.g., TBI).

It is kind of like 'life cycle' - Our military fights in wars and then they [[soldiers) are discharged and becomes customers of VA.

So now VA is faced with a whole new cohort of veterans with special needs [[e.g., TBI related symptoms, PTSD, etc. etc.). They will be with VA for another half century or more.

My guess is that overall hiring is down in non-defense/homeland security/veterans areas.

Another problem VA has is that the current retiree generation, i.e., the Vietnam Era cohort [[aka 'baby boomers') is retiring and they are moving from the 'rust belt to the sun belt.' So maybe VAMC visits are down in say some MI VAMCs but going through the roof in Florida, Arizona, etc.
