Default PGA Tour Event to be held at Detroit Golf Club in 2019 is in the works

According to a report by the Detroit News, the Tour is nearing a deal to stage a new event at Detroit Golf Club. The event could be sponsored by Quicken Loans, which is headed by Dan Gilbert, and would begin in 2019.

Gilbert is reportedly pushing for the new Tour stop to take place in Detroit's city limits to further boost the revitalized city. That makes Detroit Golf Club, a private enclave on the city's north side, a logical landing spot. It has the infrastructure to host the crowds and also features 36 holes that can be rerouted for a Tour-quality 18.

Is the golf course at Detroit Golf Club good enough for a PGA Tour event?

It can be. I have played it several times and have had experiences on par [[pun totally intended) with other PGA courses. But to be PGA quality, as the article states they would need to pick and choose the best 18 holes available from the 36 on site with reasonable modification for increased difficulty.

My thoughts as well. That place would need some serious TLC and upgrades from a dedicated group, but with Gilbert's backing and deep pockets, I wouldn't see why it couldn't happen. It might take a couple years to get it where it needs to be, but certainly obtainable. My concern, as is spelled out by the PGA, is that the surrounding immediate area is, well, less than desirable. The PGA usually asks for improvements in the local area to be made as well. I'd be stoked though if this happened. I'd certainly like to attend a PGA event if it was held there.

You are not a city resident, so you may not be aware of what is immediately adjacent to the golf course. To the west and north are the Detroit Golf Club Estates, Palmer Woods, Sherwood Forest, the University District, and the resurgent Avenue of Fashion commercial district. Immediately to the east is the Palmer Park. So it is not completely surrounded by ghettos on all 4 sides.

That being said, east of Woodward is hot garbage with the exception of the small Grixdale area. And to the south is Highland Park which is not good. This needs to be addressed. Maybe Gilbert would consider the Country Club of Detroit in Grosse Pointe, which supposedly already has PGA regulation dimensions.

I have never heard of a PGA tour stop intermingling two 18 hole courses to get the best single 18 holes. Maybe it’s happened before somewhere but it would be news to me.

It does not. Course is too short [[7,100), even playing as a par 70, as is the range. Access would be a nightmare with almost all parking a good distance away from the course. Maybe they could use the Eastland parking lots and bus people in.
