Default The 'American Beauty' building on Woodward in New Center

This has probably been discussed in the distant past, but the American Beauty building [[or its catchy name, at least) was the inspiration for a Hollywood film - I assume the 1999 Kevin Spacey movie of the same name.

Although the film has nothing to do with Detroit or the former American Beauty site on Woodward, can anyone tell me any details of the building? I think it had a Cadillac plant nearby, too.

American Electric Heater Company Building, 6125 Woodward Avenue built 1908-1909 New Amsterdam Historic District, Detroit, MI. Includes a
n article/rendering featuring the building from a 1908 edition of the Detroit Free Press.

    Demolished: 2013
The Woodward façade was extensively altered in 1934 when Woodward Avenue was widened. The building was extended to Cass Avenue and the main entrance moved to 6100 Cass Avenue.

Google "American beauty electric irons building Detroit".

Numerous articles about this building and its demise.

Will also lead you to information about the Dalgleish Cadillac dealership on he same block, and its reuse as the WSU Integrative Biosciences Center.

The American Beauty building certainly has nothing to do with American Beauty the movie. The building would have been 90 years old in 1999, far far too old for Kevin Spacey to have any interest in.

Not a Hollywood production, but inspired by American Beauty Electric Irons.

On IMDB, first-listed cast member is Lowell Boileau.

It should be noted that the façade of the building along Cass Avenue and Amsterdam was preserved:

Did this building really inspire the name of that movie? That is very interesting.

The American Beauty Iron name was the source of a film name, before the Spacey film, a 1988 German film called American Beauty, Ltd. See previous discussion about that here:

Sorry, Masterblaster. That is the Dalgleish Cadillac Building, which was rehabbed, with an addition east towards Woodward Ave. The American Beauty Electric Irons Building was Next to it. It is gone.

Among other things, American Beauty makes some of the world's best soldering irons. They last a lifetime. They are still in business and will service any of their soldering irons, regardless of age.

Did they make soldering irons first, or clothes irons?

Damn, I wish I knew that before I bought my Hakko. I would've brought one just for the Detroit association.

    From their website:

    Q. I'm confused. Is your company American Beauty Tools or Assembly Technologies International?
    A. Our company was officially incorporated in the state of Delaware under the name Assembly Technologies International. In June of 2008, the paper work was filed and approved to do business under our brand name, American Beauty Tools.

Therefore, please feel comfortable in using either name.

This company has nothing to do with American Beauty Irons.

Just found this - same company. This is from a 1923 ad. Note that it's ready to connect to any electric light socket.
