Default Would you support DPS teacher strike?

There are rumblings of a possible teacher strike as the new school season is about the begin. In lieu of the
scandals, lack of funds and bad press, would you support a teacher's strike this fall?

    No.

I don't support ANY strike that is based on economics or benefits. You don't like the pay? Quit. Go elsewhere. Office workers and teachers shouldn't even be in unions.

I only support strikes that are based on safety issues in mines or manufacturing.

No it's against Michigan law for teachers to strike. They were let off the hook last time they went on strike. They need to be punished for breaking the law this time.

I agree with you. Strike is for the socialist security reasons not for money. Money is the opiate for the masses.

Yes. The cost savings to DPS would be astronomical. Since no teaching per se occurs in DPS any way, why squander that money when the same net result can be acheived for free?

Seeing how it's been 40 years since I last went to a Detroit public school, I'll have no problem about not crossing their picket line.

I thought opium was the opiate for the masses.

I support their right to quit their jobs if they don't with to perform them. I support the hiring of new teachers who actually want to be there given the pay and benefits offered. With our 15% unemployment rate there's no shortage of potential candidates.

I strongly support the right of all workers to organize and collectively bargain over the conditions of their employment, including pay, benefits, working conditions, etc.

Having said that, I think a Detroit teachers' strike would be short-sighted in the extreme at this time, and really damn near suicidal.

The 'reasoning' for the potential strike [[I am only posting these link for information purposes, not 'endorsing' their specific content) seem to come from sites such as this:

    http://www.wsws.org/articles/2009/au...teac-a26.shtml

    http://www.bamn.com/doc/2009/090819-...aveourcity.asp

Also there seem to be connections with the city of Detroit worker unions...

    NO!!!

DPS teachers have been going on strike since I was in elementary school twenty-five years ago. They still haven't straightened these issues out? I say if they can't restructure the system how it needs to be then blow it up and start all over again, but

    NO STRIKES

They should emulate Pontiac and just fire everyone. Then re-hire the ones who are actually needed.

Detroit teachers should wake up and smell the coffee.........things are tough out there.....many people [[ like them ) who are lucky enough to HAVE jobs have had to take concessions to keep them. The city and school district is drowning in a sea of debt. Without cuts and concessions, both may cease to exist in the not to distant future.

I think that teachers have always been underpaid and deserve more money. That being said, choosing to strike during the time that an emergency financial manager is in place and further cuts are expected to come anyway, is a move that would be ill-advised.

Teachers striking... sounds like that will do wonders for the kids.

I would support a lockout and replacement of ANY striking union. They should be handled exactly like Reagan handled PATCO.

I know there are a number of posters on DY that are teachers. With apologies to them, let me say that I never had a teacher that motivated me. It always seemed to me that they were bored silly and were better clock-watchers than the students. So I've always had the attitude of "I don't give a never-no-care". Of course, that was over a half-century ago.

Same with me, and I have only been out of school since 99. Most teachers would admit that they w re "hanging on" for the pension. It wasn't until my junior year that I had a young teacher fresh from college. I went 12 years before I had a teacher under the age of 40. Think about that.

I was last a DPS student over 15 years ago. I only recall about 3 teachers who made some kind of postivie influence in my life. 1 teacher, Linda Wright @ Redford High School, sadly she left my senior year to administer at another high school, Dr. Walter McClain, the principle was always a positve influence as well, I ran into him at eastern market this past weekend and he still remembered me.
I took the cosmotology program at Redford my freshman and soph years and only 10% actually finished the program due to the instructors who were worthless and arrogant, and burnt out. So asking if they should go on strike? I say no, half of the kids on the street can't even speak good english, they drop out, etc. its sad. I know education starts in the home but alot of these kids were failed. I know there are alot of teachers who care but when my son becomes of age I doubt if he'll attend DPS.

No. There have been many strikes by them over the years. I don't support a teacher's strike anywhere. They better be grateful they have jobs to go to. With so many out of work now - and here they are with actual jobs. Go to work and thank your lucky stars!

Why haven't teachers been replaced by a DVD player and a security guard?

You have an excellent point there! If these teachers aren't careful, they can be replaced by a computer. In fact, there's probably something in the works in the background already. Schools may become extinct in the not so distant future. With all the violence that happens, people are going to be scared to send their kids to a brick and mortar building. The kids would be safer at home in front of a computer screen learning their lessons.

You know what they say...the squeaky wheel gets the grease...but only for so long...then it gets replaced.

Yes, teachers in DPS have to be careful, because as you state, there is a lot of violence. I suspect that atmosphere is not conducive to learning. DPS teachers deserve combat pay.

And yes computers are already being used, as opposed to brick and mortar, with online classes.
