Solar charger yes. Back up battery booster yes, Parked under a bright parking lamp, yes.

I'm screwed. I will have to sit this one out for a couple of days.

Will this hurt my Brand new Battery?

Not so fast there. Don't these things usually have warranties? Also, don't assume it's not caused by a failed alternator. It sounds like what Bigb23 needs is a roadside assistance service.

They're calling this situation on the east coast a "bombogenesis."

    Bombogenesis: What's a 'Bomb Cyclone'?

Oh no! Somebody set up us the bomb!

    Someone can't read a current weather map - http://bit.ly/EastStorm
Detroit will probably melt , high near 36 F for 1/8/18 predicted by NOAA

    https://www.freep.com/story/news/loc...an/1000603001/

Those affected by busted pipes, will now get slush, and mush.

^^^ Tell us about it. It's been nuts. I am on the DTE budget plan and pay the same amount every month, but still it will take me until August to get back to normal where a credit may be issued!

Are you talking about a car battery? It should be fine at the current temperatures. If it failed it's a bad battery and should be replaced under warranty.

What causes them to fail at *very* low temperatures is the water in the electrolyte [[which is sulfuric acid and water) will freeze. However, because it's water mixed with acid, it's freezing temperature is much lower [[roughly -80F)

Just for attribution, don't bother clicking, quoted in its entirety:
Cold weather helps set natural gas record on New Year's Day
Bone-chilling cold helped set a new record for natural gas consumption on New Year's Day, with an assist from the growing export market, according to the Energy Information Administration.

Overall, demand reached 150.7 billion cubic feet, which passed the previous single-day record of 143.3 Bcf on Jan. 7, 2014.

Temperatures nationwide were an average 18 degrees lower than their 30-year average on Jan. 1, and that caused a spike in heating demand. But residential and commercial consumption apparently didn't set a record that day, the agency said.

What drove demand to a new record was the heating demand coupled with a higher consumption in the electric power and industrial sectors, greater exports of natural gas to Mexico and an increased conversion of natural gas to liquefied natural gas.

There is no Central Database for water main breaks metro Detroit.
It happens more often than you might think, media doesn't report all

    http://www.dailytribune.com/general-...o-extreme-cold

Nearly 4 million residents in greater metro Detroit area.
Apparently a water main break is apathetically "no-big-deal"
    - until it happens near your house/neighborhood or business.
Everyone takes it for granted, until the tap doesn't work.

This is just for DWSD within the City of Detroit proper...

    http://archive.dwsd.org/improvedetroit/

click on the "Requests" tab to view the water main breaks.

I think there may be more water main breaks than those
shown. A higher proportion of the water main breaks
seem to be in the Midtown/Downtown area. This is where
people are much more likely to use a smartphone app to
report the problem vs. calling the DWSD emergency number.

Crains article addresses Water infrastructure issue
    - The LACK of a second water line along 14 Mile corridor serving 300,000 Oakland residents was clearly evident recently as a NO water scenario played out for several days.

    http://www.crainsdetroit.com/article...r-water-system

It's that apathetic approach many have , ""Well it's not my house"",
-- until it is your house, your family, your life.

Very little $$$ have been put in towards a solid, robust water system.
Everyone thinks water is free, cheap, easily available -- think again !!!

Yeah the roads are fairing not too well either. Connor and Grand River for example are completely busted up from the deep freeze/ thaw scene!!

A ok on the suv battery. I just kept the the trickle charger on it and a boost started it right up!
Throw it out, poster must be a salesman. Just crap money away!

This is my second battery through
AAA Mich. in six months on a low mileage Jeep. Only American made battery available in the States. I just do the best I can, and keep my fingers crossed.

Keeping the oil warm, battery fully charged, etc. goes a long way.

This article from 2013 links to a useful interactive map that shows traffic cameras and routes of salt trucks:

Website Will Let You Track Plows, Salt Trucks In Wayne County
We have some of the trucks loaded with cameras, so they can do a virtual drive along. They can see where the trucks have been, what routes have been cleared. So it’s an interactive site for the public to use. And we advise them to look at that site if they have an opportunity.
I couldn't find a working video truck feed.

I thought as much, my sense of humor on a scale of 1-10 is now 3. Except for the new "Episodes" on Netflix right now, then my humor scale is off the charts.

    Everything is good now.

A 60 year old pipe - cause three southbound lanes of Van Dyke between 14 Mile Road and 15 Mile Road to be closed for six days [[beginning Nov. 14) , causing traffic obstacles for motorists and shoppers on the bustling roadway.
