I was at the fireworks in June and while I wasn't there tonight this makes me sad, disappointed, and even a little bit hopeless. We can't have anything nice it seems...

Crime [[random and senseless) will remain a deterrent to people living in and coming to Detroit.

I was going to go to the CCS Noel events [[which is one of the participants of the and near the shootings along with the Scarab Club, backside of the DIA, the Michigan Science Center etc.) as a start point of my Noel Night.

I ended up not going owing to other plans. Now I am glad I didn't.

What does that say? And I live here near Midtown.

Wife and I usually take the kids but didn't this year, we arrived in Mid-town a bit after nine, was very surprised that we found quick and close parking. By about 9:30pm, we took a pic right out front of the DIA.

We noticed a large police presence but just thought it was no big deal. It was not until afterwards we heard why.

Also, this was not a random shooting, this was an altercation between people who are very immature. Why does it lead to gun fire? I will won't be able to answer.

Random is what happened in Las Vegas, sad that many people were scared and thinking the worst last night as well.

It was nice to still see many people in mid-town last night, enjoying the nice December night. Very 'big city" of many people to just get over it and enjoy their night.

I had a great time getting around the whole venue by bike on that balmy December night. The Cass separated bike lines were fantastic when the street was gridlocked and I could travel Woodward 3 times faster than the Q-line. It is too bad about the shooting, but it is almost a given that there will be some jerk in a crowd of thousands and one can't let that fact run ones life.

I was in CCS when this happened, but did not yet know. Went to Detroit Historical Museum next, and then to a concert only to find it had ended early. I am annoyed and disappointed, but this will not deter me from living, working, and enjoy being 48202.

^^^ Yeah I here that. I too enjoy the area - have done so for decades. Not giving in, but you must watch your surroundings everywhere!

Of course it's terrible there was this senseless shooting at a nice family event in it's 45th year, but the snide comments about Detroit I've seen in some places are pretty annoying. Let's not pretend there isn't a mass shooting somewhere in the US practically every day. I've lived in this city for almost 20 years and I won't be deterred from attending events here.

^^^ I noticed that. It was not a random shooting but in light of recent incidents that have been random here in the US. I can see how that commentary could get pushed forward.

Me either. I've lived here for almost 20 years and can count on a few hands the people I've known who were maimed or killed by gun violence. 4 shot, no fatalities? Sounds like we should be thanking their lucky stars. Call me a desensitized diehard with low expectations, I can take it.

I've heard rumblings that the set up for this years Noel event was bad, that Woodward was opened up to traffic because of the QLine, pushing everyone onto the sidewalks, and crowd control was non existent. That the event wasn't heavily promoted, limiting the amount of info about Noel Night events being disseminated, and that there were no maps out for the attendees which created some confusion, which is not what we've experienced in past years. Can anyone confirm this?

I also heard that Woodward was kept open because of the Q-Line. Pedestrian traffic control was very orderly, and it was probably the largest Noel Night crowd I've seen. There was a watch tower set up at the corner of Woodward and Warren. I'd never seen that before. Don't know about paper maps, but there was plenty of information on-line.

The car traffic seemed more backed up than previous years. That was surprising, because Woodward was open. When police cars started showing up with lights on, I thought it was to fix the car situation - not for a shooting a block away.

I was in the DIA in the back entrance near the cafe when the shots rang out. It was panic and pandemonium after that. Outside with people running, inside with a crowd storming the back entrance, and then people panicking inside and running for the fire exits. My kids were terrified. Hope to never experience something like that again. Oherwise, the event was a lot of fun and we’ll be back. Certainly won’t deter us from coming back to the city, but some of the faces I saw on other parents and children crying, I don’t know about them.

First thing someone mentioned to me today was the shooting. Makes it difficult for me to sell Detroit to suburbanites when this type of nonsense makes headlines over all the other developments.

PS. They had no clue about Hudson and Monroe breaking or about to break ground. Cool, more opportunity for me.

I almost took my family there. I'm glad I didn't. My loved ones might have gotten trampled or shot. Either way, the night would have been ruined for everyone.

    God bless you Detroit.

The chief of police was just on TV telling the nation that this happens in every American city. People on this forum are quick to bring up the shooting in Sterling Heights and the low crime Detroit Central Business District area. It is a slap in the face to the victims when your apology is accompanied by justification and marginalization. I don't want to hear feel good excuses that this happens in other cities or districts. I want to know what is being done to assure it doesn't happen again in Detroit. No one cares about Portland or Sterling Heights.

Event organizers and the DPD should be commended for taking the proper response by shutting that !@#$ down, no exceptions. That sends the right message to the entire community that if we want to have fun doing the kinds of things civilizations do, we first need to carry out the civil part. Let's not marginalize or downplay misbehavior anymore. Let's make examples out of them, and let everyone know that this garbage is no longer tolerated in Michigan's cities.

Everyone knows you are trying to rebuild Detroit, and we commend you for it. We'll keep going to your Noel Nights if you stop marginalizing bad behavior and start showing us what happened, that the criminals were dealt with in a swift and just manner, and that there is a modified plan in place to prevent it from happening again.

Every time something like this happens you withdraw credibility points from Detroit's social "bank account". When you have successful events and developments, you add to that account. Just focus on adding to managing the inflow and outflow of that social bank account, and you'll get to where you're going.

The gods are smiling down on Detroit. Don't !@#$ it up by making them angry.

Oh you will keep coming down if you get exactly what you want? Did I miss it where this shooter was given a free pass and let go free? Sorry, but when someone of this nature happens it is nice to have a little perspective.

Feel free to skip future Noel Nights if it means you will keep your sanctimonious opinion on how to handle such matters to yourself as well.

The shooter was arrested who was responsible for the Noel Night Shooting on the corner of John R Rd. and Farnsworth St. It was a 16 year old Detroit teen. He goes to East English Village Prep. Academy [[formally Finney High School site). The shooting was a beef from the rival high school football game.

Detroit Police Chief will issue curfews for youth next time for special events.

When was the rivalry football game? East English's last football game was played over a month ago on November 3.

It sounds like this was handled as it should have been. I commend authorities for their swift action.

My point was that everyone already understands that Detroit is a work in progress. You don't need to apologize for Detroit anymore or hide things.

You shouldn't have to explain it to people. When the required work is put in to fix the problems, then Detroit's revival will just be self evident.

    They caught him quick. Great!

I am curious, now what do the good people of Detroit and the surrounding communities think should be done with this poor misguided and unfortunate soul?
