Teen tries to rob Detroiter, ends up shot by victim

George Hunter / The Detroit News

Detroit -- A 17-year-old would-be armed robber had the tables turned on him this morning when his intended victim pulled out his own gun and shot the teen, police said.
Now, instead of the money he allegedly sought to steal, the teen will get a lengthy hospital stay -- and, if he recovers and is convicted, a lengthy prison sentence.
The incident happened about 5 a.m. this morning behind an apartment building at 1670 Oakman, Detroit Police spokesman John Roach said.
"The 17-year-old came up behind a 32-year-old man behind the apartment building and tried to rob him at gunpoint," Roach said. "But the 32-year-old had a CCW [[a license to carry a concealed weapon), and had his own sidearm with him. He pulled his weapon and they exchanged gunfire."
When the shooting was over, the 32-year-old had only suffered a minor injury to the head, while the alleged bandit was seriously wounded. He was taken to an area hospital, where he remains in critical condition, Roach said.
"If he recovers, he'll likely be charged with armed robbery, and probably attempted murder," Roach said.

Maybe it will be an epiphany and the young man will study law in prison, working extra hours in the hooscow to set aside funds for the new wayward child assistance program that he will start when he gets out

Don't you know what will happen? Come on people. The thugs parents [[whom probably wouldn't recognize the kid if they passed him in the street), or his brother or his sister or his auntie who claims he's a "good child" will sue the gentleman and will get a large sum of money. They they will turn around and sue the City of Detroit for whatever stupid reason and the Law Department will settle because they are known to just give money away to get rid of an annoyance.

I'm sure the shooter is no angel himself. Hanging out in the alley behind Oakman Boulevard at 5 AM?? Carrying a concealed firearm?

Still, no sympathy for the thug victim.

I believe that the man was on his way to his job, he had a CCW and was legal to carry that weapon. Circumstances would dictate if he was correct in drawing his sidearm and firing at the man who tried to rob him..

He wouldn't have been issued a CCW permit if he had a criminal record of any kind.

You are sure he is no angel? Where did you read that he was hanging out? Even if he only came out side to smoke or take the dog out, that is no reason to be robbed.

"No, I couldn't justify robbing him, he's just smoking a cigarette.

However, if he was just hanging out..."

Fortunately, Michigan now has a law protecting those who defend themselves against such lawsuits.

Hopefully this will cause some other lowlifes to think twice. You just never know who might fight back.
