    Default Housing in Detroit

With a vacancy rate of 29%, you might wonder why it is a challenge for moderate and low income people to find housing in the city of Detroit. The Freep has a story about foreclosures this morning. The NY Times has a story about the Motor City as a housing incubator.

The large banks sure write few mortgages in the city.

    One general thought:

Someone asked how we'll know when Detroit is back?

Looking at the graphic on mortgages, maybe when [[assuming it happens) say 5 - 6K mortgages annually are written for Detroit houses.

That would be suggestive of a strong housing market, probably across the city.

And a strong housing market probably would mean the city is doing very well.
