In my day, there were also chain grocery stores in almost all of those locations. Grandland [[Grand River/Fenkell) had three, Kroger, A&P and one more. How many chain grocery stores are in the city as a whole now?
Kroger had opened a store in Gratiot and 7 in 2001 only to close in 2002 due to theft. Miles market opened in the same spot almost immediately and amazingly after 15 yrs of operation no reports of theft. Hmmmm. I say that the Spartan food boys don't like too much competition. Open a Kroger on Jefferson West of Mt Elliott, Gratiot west of MacDougall, or Woodward, South of Mack then you will see most of the Spartan stores go out of business
