I saw the hovering cloud of chemical smoke hovering above our beloved town from more than 30 miles away. It was creepy. A very particle-lit sky over Detroit today. Hm.

    Detroit chemical factory burns, explodes

    BY ZLATI MEYER

No one was injured in a fire at a chemical factory Monday that set off a hazardous materials situation in northwest Detroit, officials said.

Detroit Fire Deputy Chief Edward Smith said crews had the blaze -- which started at about 2:30 p.m. at Diversified Chemical Technologies, 15477 Woodrow Wilson -- under control by 6:30 p.m. Smoke could be seen for miles around during the blaze. Fire crews were expected to be on the scene until this morning.

Numerous explosions set off during the fire were caused by 55-gallon drums of chemicals, Smith said. He did not specify which chemicals but did say there were oil and petroleum products inside.

Air-quality test results did not indicate any problems, he said, although residents in the area were told to stay inside as a precaution.

Representatives from Diversified Chemical could not be reached for comment.

Mary Walker, 66, a retired sign-language interpreter who lives in the area, was nervous about the fumes and said she wasn't told by anyone to stay inside.

"I'm inhaling it," Walker said while outside, where she had been talking to neighbors. "There should have been an evacuation because of all the chemicals."

A cause for the fire is not known.

Diversified's Web site describes it as a company specializing in chemical products with six subsidiaries that offer specialized services to firms including Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Group LLC.

Bill McGraw contributed to this report.
