Default Marygrove College Axes Undergrad Programs

This has to be a cluster... for the undergrad student body just a few weeks before school opens.
"Marygrove College in Detroit will close its undergraduate program next year, with the private school offering graduate studies only starting winter semester 2018.

"Incoming and returning students have been notified. Marygrove officials will offer academic and financial counseling to help undergraduate students identify and transfer to institutions that offer their degree.

"Enrollment peaked at 1,850 in 2013, but the Catholic institution recorded just 966 undergraduate and graduate students in 2016, the release said.

"Vigorous marketing and recruitment efforts have failed to provide sufficient revenue from our undergraduate programs to continue operations as usual," Burns said in the release. "A recent analysis found that Marygrove is not sustainable in its current business model. And undergraduate enrollment is projected to be lower than last fall."

Indeed. I have a cousin who got her degree there and actually lived on campus.

I wonder if most undergrads will transfer to say UDM since it is nearby and also a Catholic university.

Another question might be if someday Marygrove merges into UDM and ceases to be an independent college.

After all, decades ago Marygrove was a women's only college and that has obviously changed over time so how is Marygrove unique vis-a-vis UDM [[which is UofD + Mercy)?

There's no point to Marygrove anymore. It was established as a Catholic women's college in a Catholic neighborhood. No need for women's college, religious colleges are a tough sell, and the area is no longer Catholic. The neighborhood surroundings don't help.

In a state with declining student-age population, the weakest institutions have a very tough future. Marygrove can't compete with public universities on price and quality.

The administration couldn't have announced this is in the spring so students could make other plans? At least the Archdiocese did that back in March 2005 when it closed a dozen high schools.

Marygrove has transformed itself several times over the decades, and is now doing so once again. This campus needs to open itself up to the neighborhood, and in time may want to merge with UDMercy. It remains a great venue for a wedding/reception. Good luck!

Marygrove was in talks with the old U of D and Mercy College in the very late 80s which led to the formation of Univ of Detroit Mercy in 1990-1991. For various reasons, Marygrove decided not to become part of a larger merger of three schools.
