Police reports and archives from early 1960s

I'm looking for records surrounding a crime that took place in Detroit in 1963. Can anyone tell me where I might best begin my search, or if such archives are even likely to exist?

Try the 3rd floor of DPD Headquarters. There is a Police Department museum with many pictures and memorabilia. If the manager is there, he can pull up much information via computer and may be able to help you.

Also try the main library. Annual reports are compiled every year which include crime stats. A copy every year is sent to the library and also to the Library of Congress in D.C.
