What's most noteworthy of her whole comment is the "I don’t know," part. She's sounded off on many topics adding the caveat of not fully knowing or not being an expert... umm, I take her at her word. Leave me alone re. what I grow in and consume from my garden......

I'm not sure what she's talking about or if yucca can be grown in the Bronx but maybe quotas of yuccas could be required of community gardens as a Green New Deal mandate. This falls short of making my list of Democratic Presidential Candidate virtues....

^^^ Hah! I just thought the whole 'colonial' thing was so laughable... and I get the whole 'dog whistle' thing of. Like what proof test will be needed next for the new orthodoxy of purity, eschewing sin.

In the mean time there are people going hungry right here, right now! We DO not need more food snobbery and elitism!!

    Go away... [[her, not you!)......

OH and eh' BTW, yes I detest the rignt-winged DOG whistles TOO, should someone think I am only one-sided about this.

I took the "I don't know" part to be more of a hesitation like "uh" or "um" while AOC's brain was fishing around for something to contrast yucca with. Cauliflowers showed up on AOC's relative bad list one way or another for whatever reasons. I looked up cauliflower and came up with a few numbers. China is the world's #1 grower of cauliflower growing over 50% of the world's crop and is increasing its production 20% a year. India is the world's #2 producer of cauliflower. The U.S. is the 7th. ranking producer. Mexico grows twice as much as the U.S.. Cauliflower, a cruciferous vegetable like broccoli, may protect against lung cancer.

Maybe AOC's dissing cauliflower was nothing more than her distaste for it. It's impossible to surmise what goes on in her mind. Bush the First hated broccoli although he didn't politicize broccoli by calling it"colonial". "I do not like broccoli. And I haven't liked it since I was a little kid and my mother made me eat it. And I'm President of the United States and I'm not going to eat any more broccoli." -George H.W. Bush

A word for yucca:“[Yucca] comes from our ancestors. They’re easy to plant too,” says Gonzalez. You simply break off a piece of the root, and bury it in the ground so it will sprout another plant. Robles says she uses the roots to make pasteles—a fried patty with shredded yucca root and a variety of meats. The Taínos, native Puerto Ricans, also cultivated yucca to make casaba, a kind of bread cracker.

Yes, I was being a bit snarky about her 'I don't know' only because she's added similar disclaimers on more serious issues. And her use of the word 'colonial' was for certain very specific, as a signal. HAH!

In the mind of AOC Yucca is the forerunner to soylent green in order to feed the worlds hunger for free.

My urban garden has a tomato plant that has 3 tomatoes on it,I do not see that as sustainable,or any other urban garden, sure it is kinda cool to save the planet and say I have a garden but if it does not provide you with 3 meals a day 365 it is more time and energy spent then saving.

I can see if one has a herb garden but when I can buy 6 farm fresh tomatoes for $1 what is the point.

It is easy to sway the crowd by telling them what they want to hear because they do not know how to implement them let alone distinguish between fantasy and reality.

Trump sucks, everything should be free, rich people suck, corporations suck.

Hey I can now run for President,I have a platform, anybody going to vote for me?

^^^ In any event the elite [[far left and right - socialist or capitalist) will dine sumptuously unfettered, drive car desired, fly aircraft they condemn, and their own private security as needed, living in opulent big foot/ grand height property of their choosing. Yah-dah...

Soylent? Yummy... were all part of the chain of 'sustainability'. Looks like Washington is making a move a bit too close for comfort for me in that area:

Washington becomes the first state to legalize composting of humans

Great, now I will come back re-incarnated as a tree that a dog lifts its leg on every day,no thanks.

Where I am at it is actually illegal to bury a dog or cat in the back yard but in the future I can mix concrete and the dust of my enemies for a front step so I can step on them every morning.

Saw this on drudge. Somehow, this is a good picture of our former Vice-president. Reflections on the dark aviator glasses, licking a cone, sleeve rolled up. waving cash, and the wristwatch. It all works. It's so good, I had to wonder if it was photoshopped. This picture needs a title.

    How about......

“Cone-Head” or “Mr Mediocrity II” [[obama being “the I” of course).

It would be fun to have him as the candidate and see debates between President Trump and a remnant of the eight wasted obama years.

The democrat “contest” for Presidential Candidate is a joke.

The media, who has to say something [[anything) is “amazed” at how Biden is running away with it [[him being white and old).

Why don’t they state the TRUTH for once and explain than although he is SO BAD, he’s winning because the alternatives are unthinkably “BADDER”.

Utterly absurd. and ALL of the top 10 are leading Trump in polls. And every one of them is significantly smarter and less corrupt - although that doesn't take much.

Biden is ahead because the corporatist Dem leadership and their media cronies WANT him to be ahead. He represents Business As Usual - just as Hillary did.

Poll after poll - including polls from right-leaning and even fallen-off-the-deep-end of the right organizations - have shown STRONG support for ideas put forth by what the media and DNC consider the "fringe" of the party - like universal health care, decreasing the wealth gap [[anytime a millionaire says he got rich from hard work, the correct response is "whose?"), environmental protection, etc.

After watching Bernie’s speech today,I am kinda liking what he is saying,I was thinking about scraping up some cash for that Kresges place but according to him I actually have a right to it,if all goes well I can probably get a government grant for the Uhaul.

Along with my right to free water and electricity and with the rich picking up the property tax bill I just might be able to swing it.

All of these hopefuls up there telling everybody what they want to hear, what exactly have they been doing in office for 40 years that all of a sudden they are going to change the world?

No wonder they legalized weed, they figured if they get everybody stoned enough the only thing they really have to promise and provide is Cheetos for the munchies.

There is another poll out there claiming that 67% of women aged 20 to 57 prefer socialism over capitalism.

Maybe Bernie can give them a government plane so they can fly to the socialist country of thier choice.

Hong Kong is rioting in the streets in order to stop the ills of socialism and in America we have politicians trying to convince the county that it is the best thing sense sliced cheese.

Of course with them at the top they will be the ones dictating and not actually crushed under it.

I'm still waiting for my cut of Bernie's million. No check in yesterday's mail. Maybe today. Pass that over will you? I want another hit.

^^^^ Bernie's just doing the low-hanging fruit approach that many can sign onto with little thought or depth:

    MEAN-repub-rich-people-system-making-too-much-money-envy

    VS

    WE-promise-you-what-you-WANT-for-nothing-equality-everyone

One of the problems is he excludes himself/ his cache from the rich, making too much money rhetoric!

Class warfare is a staid and typical strategy of his ideology. It works so well, initially. Then you meet the NEW BOSS!

I like the whole Democratic socialist label.

Like there is anything democratic in socialism.

I think the schools should have a socialism field trip, take the students and drop them off in a socialist country for a week, and then pick up the ones that survive.

Notice how everybody campaigns on term limits but yet when they get elected all of the sudden it is off of the table.

^^^ Democratic socialist comes off much kinder, softer.

I get that alot of young people find socialism appealing but Sander's CLEARLY knows better [[beyond his rhetoric).

He's live long enough to know the outworkings of ribald socialism beyond books and documentaries, or knowing nothing of history. He is part of that historic apologetic narrative! Ah, bring on the class warfare!

This stuffs mainly selling because it is a repudiation of ole' DUMPTrump so why look/ think any further?!

    That's the deception.

Bernie has appeal because many are getting screwed by the current system. He's not deceiving people.

    https://www.peoplespolicyproject.org...n-900-billion/

Between 1989 and 2018, the top 1 percent increased its total net worth by $21 trillion. The bottom 50 percent actually saw its net worth decrease by $900 billion over the same period.

If you believe in what he is saying then it is not a deception as our choices are rather thin to start with.

However, the redistribution of wealth he proposes is problematic for others. His eschewing/ demonization of de' rich works only when you believe it applies to the mega wealthy [[of which he shares charter membership). 'Till the torch bearers are heading for your check!

Such argumentation and class warfare has been used in the past to garnet support and issue forth policy. It presents as a philosophy to rectify current and past injustices but usually just shifts about the new people who will take power/ with hand offs of deal we still have little say in towards our own agency, and true equality.

It's simple rhetoric--not even complex. After all without much thought who'd not get on the band-wagon of 'get the evil rich folk', tasty nuggets. And people ARE hurting out here on many levels. But when thought thru we see the definition of rich always heads downward. The elite remain. History shows this.

When we understanding that the middle class will be the core target of wealth re-assignment we see the rhetoric of equality flaws. The free college thing has to have a few well-heeled academes scratching their heads. After all the rhetoric is fine until it hits ones on pockets. Umm?

Bottom line: Again we have poor candidates and the two front runners so far replete with baggage and rhetoric as the wind blows - and advanced in age. A factor not completely ignored per the younger vote required ala the socialist and broad democratic base.

And no, I don't like Trumps rhetoric etc. either. His base is probably waning.

Wealth is already being redistributed to the 1%. See article I linked to above. The middle class is shrinking and poverty is increasing. I don't see anything wrong with trying to rectify that. People shouldn't be going bankrupt from medical bills. Wages have not kept up with inflation etc.

  25. #375

I agree and yet they [[and his ideological brand) are always ragging on the middle class. Big promises and derision, derision and... take your choice.

Such is the way of it...

Mostly derived from a form of social pragmatism -- tried before. But maybe as we actually have a mixed economy [[not purely capitalistic as touted) it can work this way around; here in this here dis-united states!

Still, I bet the tenured elites/ very top admins of academe are a bit nervous about Bernies 'free' college doo-dad promise[[s).

Just how are they going to continue to rake in the mega bucks ala that industry? Living in their rarefied bubbles of security, driving their fancy cars while telling others driving is evil and other hypocrisies.

The 'get the rich' pruning may kill off the tree of selected wealth in unpredicted ways!

    Shocking!
