Yes, it is bad. Much worse than the severe recession of 1983/1984. Then, we assumed that good times would return. Now, most realize that this time they are not likely to.
I only recently found a job that pays about what I earned in 1980, after a year and a half of unemployment. One co worker was a tool maker. Another was a mechanical engineer. I was a layout inspector at a gear manufacturer.
We all had a great life, with good pay, vacations, the ability to help put our children through college. New cars every few years.
Gone!
In the past, about seventy percent of our economy was based on the ability of consumers like us to purchase goods and services.
Gone!
Middle class lifestyle for those who work and produce goods:
Gone!

The replacement of so called Free Trade with Fair Trade would help, if it is not already too late.

What kind of work have you done?

I read an article that said many Fortune 500 companies were started during recessions because people who were laid off were freed to develop new ideas that wouldn't have emerged otherwise.

Absurd....low end jobs are very available for very hard working, nondemanding employees. Remember, down south, we "need" to look the other way because Mexican immigrants are doing the work that Americans "will not do"

Thanks for the welcome and the links.

I have done quite a few things in my life. I started out working in rests. when I was younger as prep cook, then onto running the place.
Then I moved onto the construction field were I worked as a laborer, foreman, supervisor and then had y own company for a few years working in the toxic waste remediation industry.

When I tired of that, and I had to close due to a slow down in business I went into building maintenance which I have been doing for appr 13 yrs up until 2 yrs ago.

I also dabbled in selling antiques and writing but that never panned out for full time work. JJust some pocket money and a few stories published without pay.

I just want something to keep me going for the time being. Maybe it is because of my age?
At any rate am going to Boston to see a friend on a week or so and he is going to try and help me out.

Man the market here sure is rough. You would figure I could at least score a fast food job but I cant even get a call back on that.

I should have invested my money in a deli in some populated area when I had cash. Now Im one step from losing the roof over my head.

TThis blows.

Reminds me of a scene I observed at a Taco Bell, several months ago. A well dressed woman was applying for a job at the counter. When she presented her resume, the manager asked "Are you applying for a management position or an associate position?" The reply was "I am applying for a job. I worked my way through engineering school as a fast food manager, but need a job, now."

Turns out, she lost her long term contract position at GM, and was receiving no unemployment compensation. She had distributed twenty resumes and applications in two days, looking for fast food or restaurant work.

Scoliosis? Who told you that? Even if true, it isn't necessarily something that causes symptoms. Severe [[meaning surgical correction needed) is 27 degrees or more of angulation. If this disabled, then apply for disability. 53? Prime age.

Yes, my scoliosis is pretty bad. I have a huge hump on the left side of my back .
It has thrown my back into a variable disarray of herniations, fluid loss, DDG, and flattened thecal sacs.
But no, I refuse to become a ward of the state.
I am capable of working, I just can not do any hard manual labor anymore.

I can't comment other than the general rule of 27 degrees as I mentioned. BTW, if it is greater than that, it will be progressive and needs to be corrected surgically.

Regarding bulges, herniations, flattening thecal sacs, etc...they mean little to nothing as 70-80 percent of the asymptomatic populace has these findings on imaging/MRI.

Still glad to be employed, even at a sometimes part time job that pays about what I made in the 1980s.
Just got pissed off, though. Watching CNN, saw Bush's old press secretary [[Ari Fleischer sp?) blame Obama for the jobless rate.
Facts: USA lost nearly 600,000 jobs in December. About 250,000 last month.
I guess this is some of that "fuzzy math" that was once mentioned by W!
Facts just don't matter to these people!

UFO, I'm curious as to why everyone was welcoming you to the forum as if you are new. Nonetheless I guess its a good gesture. I recall a couple weeks ago, you mentioned that you were losing your home soon and had planned to hitch hike your way out of this state. Were you one of the 1000 people applying for stimulus money at cobo today so you won't be homeless? I respect the fact you want to work, but there is nothing wrong with you receiving some type of assistance to get you by until you find a job. There is no reason you should torture yourself. If you don't have an address where will you get corresponding mail for employment? Toys R Us is hiring, Target will be hiring soon. All I can say is DON'T GIVE UP.

True about Target. My Friend's wife took a seasonal shelf stocking job with them one X mas and they kept her on after X mas. She's been there a few years so far.

So, bats, now that you can conclusively determine via the Dyes Forum that the poster in question has no back pain , why not send a bill to Medicare/Medicaid and any other federal agency that you might be able to scam.

It is worse than the very bad recession of the early 1980s. Difference is, then we assumed things would get better. Few are as optimistic now.
